Tatoos are a big todo on the Forum these days.

Some for, some against.

And everyone has their reasons.

What do you say?

I will offer a new poll to keep things simple.

Hmm...I'm not sure of any of the options...

Maybe the question of whether the New Testament Christian is actually under the Old Testament law, is also relevant. :chin

You're procrastinating.
I expected your answer to be up there first.

I think the neither yes nor no answer is fairly good (although I don't feel like keeping Pontius Pilate company on an issue so far removed from what he had to figure).

I put "No" because that's my preference, but as far as the law is concerned, this is what it says:
You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. (Lev. 19:27-28 ESV)
All of the things mentioned in these verses are Pagan mourning customs. I believe it is only in that context (mourning) that we are not allowed to do these things. Doing them for other reasons is not forbidden. In fact, some of them (shaving the hair and beard) are actually commanded in some circumstances (See Num. 6:18 and Lev. 14:9 for examples).

In fact, to preachers who might criticize men and women today who have tattoos, one could even ask: Do preachers shave?

Because the adjacent verse in the Leviticus passage you mentioned says about not trimming the corners of beards. (Maybe the original context is Old Testament Jews in the land under the law?)

I said 'no', a Christian should not get them because they are still very much the mark of worldly rebellion, pride, and sensuality.

Ask me again when getting a tattoo becomes like Christmas and shaving the hair on the sides of one head and all traces of it's pagan origins have been lost to history and no one is left practicing it in the world who does it for the original purpose it was done for.

So are you against Christmas, too? :chin

Good grief not again..... this circle just keeps spinning ..... Look like the world as much as you can ....

reba: Maybe the question of motive, especially if it's for a Bible verse or Christian witness design, comes into it...

I am trying to find some reason to care about tattoo's. They are expensive and a pain to remove so any Tattoo "Before Jesus" would not even be worth considering. We get a new body anyway so God might leave them on, might not, God does have a sense of humor. "Why I am going out skinny and not fat, no need for angel wings if you can't use them."

Seriously, who cares? I can't think of a reason I would even be concerned about a brother or sister in Christ Getting one, unless the Tattoo showed a sign that there was a heart condition that was going the wrong way.

Jesus said he judges no man after the flesh. I think we need to do the same. It's the heart condition that might get a tattoo depicting something alarming, the tattoo just the symptom, and not the root of the problem.

Mike.

Brother Mike : I think I would probably agree with a good deal of what you say, really.

There is also the aspect that some people do like actively to have designs that are faith based. Which make for effective conversation-starters. sjlord88 on the other thread was talking about wanting a Bible verse tattooed on her.

The old testament is the law given to God's chosen people, the Jews. When Jesus came into the world, he fulfilled & completed the law. The law was all about atonement. Jesus shed his blood for the remission of sins, he washed us clean from sin. So the law was completed. Jesus never said anything about tattoos. But he did say what came out of the mouth was more important than what went in it. Therefore, I think our faith in him & love for one another are the most important things we should be concerned with. That is enough because most of us can't even master those two things on a steady basis. We fall & fail every day in some way. It's this crazy world we live in. It's really tough. But on a personal note, I personally feel they permanently deface God's property. I think people get tattoos out of vanity & that's a sin. So I am against them.

cherovis:

I can appreciate much of what you say, indeed.

There is the aspect that some Christians honestly think that, say, a Christian fish sign <>< on a wrist, for example, can help them witness to others; I guess for some Christians this is not an irrelevant consideration.

Also I guess it can be hard to draw the line if necessarily tattoos are to be regarded as vain: otherwise, it might be also supposedly necessary for Christian women to wear only short, plain haircuts, plain pants and flat heels always, and only one small pair of earrings (if at all), on the ground that anything more would be vain.

I guess for matters of attire and personal style, moderation is the key, really. You would probably agree.

Blessings.

Certainly would not fault the belief here. We just need to be careful for condemning others for what they allow.

Mike.

@Brother Mike :

What you say also seems to be basically what Romans 14.22 says.

But I can appreciate @cherovis 's sense of personal preference and desire to honor the Lord. Fact is, that some Christians also actively try to honor the Lord with a faith based design.

Blessings.
