Is it ok to sometimes stay on the dole?

During an unemployed spell, I was drawing dole and the Jobcentre sent me to apply for a job at Spar convenience store, but when I walked in, I took one look at the booze, cigarettes and porn mags on the shelves and thought "No way hozay am I going to handle and sell stuff like that!", and walked out, and went back on the dole.
As a matter of interest what would CF members have done?
And are there any guidelines in scripture about what we should do in such situations?

I would ask 'How 'clean " was the monies your received for doing nothing?

2Th_3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

Well, I eased my guilt feelings a bit by reminding myself I'd been paying taxes for years, so I was getting some of it back in dole. Also I helped out at charity shops as an unpaid volunteer while I was on the dole which further soothed my guilt feelings.
Back to my question- What would you have done?

I would have worked while looking for another job.

at 69 and a practicing "internet evangelist" and you don't know the answer to this simple question? I find that odd.

During an unemployed spell...

I was under the impression that unemployment insurance is a type of insurance product that is fully paid for. Employers pay the premiums in your name while you are working. You receive attenuated wages because of this. So, in effect, you have paid the premiums for this insurance.

Its similar to Social Security and Medicare insurance. You and your employer pay the premium while you are working, and then you collect when you are 65 or so.

Not sure what dole is? You have to know where your own principles are at within a situation as this. There are many more jobs that you could take other than convenient stores where porn is sold. I worked in retail for over thirty years and never had to deal with selling anything that came against my principles as a Christian.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (reprobate means unworthy)

Shakespeare said "To thy own self be true." We have to be true to our convictions.

if it goes against your convictions then you did right .to him who knows to do good and dont is a sin . its not you buying the booze or the magazines..if your conscience said heyyyyyyyyyy stop. you did right

This verse does not apply to the subject at hand. I know it's quoted numerous times to justify being anti-social safety nets but it's taken way out of context. The context is the early church where believers held everything in common. There were men who refused to do anything because they thought Jesus was coming back. It does not apply to those who are having a hard time finding work, can't work for certain reasons, etc.

Someone quoted that to my disabled husband to justify refusing any help when we were homeless.

IMO, it applies to the able bodied from age 20 to 50. In the OT, Levites were required to be assigned regular duties from age 20 to 50. After 50, they were no longer allowed to be assigned regular duties.

It has nothing to do with unemployment insurance for the able bodied, which is a paid for insurance product, and temporary while someone is searching for sensible employment.

Right, attenuated Social Security can be collected at 62. Medicare is 65.

Social Security said:
Since 1957, if you had military service earnings for active duty (including active duty for training), you paid Social Security taxes on those earnings. Since 1988, inactive duty service in the Armed Forces reserves (such as weekend drills) has also been covered by Social Security.

Social Security.

SS reductions only apply to working income. My hubs gets SSDI right now AND military retirement. His military retirement does not count against his disability check. Its called "double dipping". He's been out of the workforce since 2011.

I miss being able to work but I thank God for unemployment checks when there were no jobs . Being in traveling construction I've been laid off many times but usually found a job quick or had one lined up except once for 8 months .. Right now is a good time to learn a skill , I would suggest a welding course to any young folks and learn it with a passion, you don't need to learn all the classroom stuff they try to sell you to start a business, just basic learn to weld and certify .. You will pick up a lot of other stuff and can make other decisions later where to go if you wish ..
Decent money and per-diem with plenty overtime if you're willing to travel .. I've seen some husband and wife teams knock down some big money and you can quit anytime if you have a better job come up and get good at what you do ..

My apologies for not doing this sooner. I am moving this thread to the Lounge.
