I would say it signifies something wrong in the believer's spiritual life if they think about hell all the time.

Maybe it's just plain arrogance. A sense of superiority that these people are suffering and I won't be because I'm saved. Which is pretty stupid as I don't know for a fact that I'm saved.

TimothyW, I really do want you to explain how you get 'eternal, conscious torment' out of the argument that 'people seal their own fate and in effect send themselves to hell when they reject the truth'. I'm serious.

My point always was that "People send themselves to hell" is not written anywhere in the Bible. And It Is Not. Period. End of Story.

According to what bible? Jesus says in verse 41 its eternal fire.. maybe your using another version? What does your version say?

What do you think the fire does? What kind of fire doesn't burn up what is put into it? Why do you assume that the fire doesn't burn? Why do you ignore all of the passages that say that the wicked will be destroyed? Why do you think that saying they will go into fire proves that they won't be destroyed by the fire?

The destruction of Sodom is an example of something that has been destroyed by eternal fire, and the Bible says that is an example of the coming destruction of the wicked on the day of judgment. Jude 1:7
This also agrees with what Jesus said in Matthew 10:28 where He said that the the body and soul would be destroyed in Gehenna.
This also agrees with what Jesus said in Matthew 7:13 where He said that the road is wide that leads to destruction.
This also agrees with what Jesus said in Luke 13:3 where He said unless you repent, you will likewise perish.

Isn't it nice how God doesn't contradict Himself unless you assume that the eternal fire is a special weird kind of fire that doesn't destroy anything?

Let me make it even more clear, by putting it into the very same words that the Bible itself uses:
"For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction."

Some people choose to not believe and be conformed to the truth. That is how they send themselves to hell:

"10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned." (Titus 3:10-11 NASB)


Just as there are those who choose to believe the truth and who save themselves:

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized" (Acts 2: 40-41 NASB)


There, the argument has been explained to you from the Bible. So, if you want to continue to twist the argument to mean something that is not being said then you will be in deceit.

Don't forget that the gnashing of teeth and all of the weeping is followed by destruction in the furnace. Perhaps that it why Jesus never said how long the wicked will be gnashing before they are destroyed??? I don't "take misguided comfort out of believing that the weeping lasts only for a little while", since the weeping is followed by destruction. Who would do this? Do you think people would say, "Oh Goody I will be destroyed in 5 minutes, that means my weeping will only last for a little while!"

Those verses do not say "People send themselves to hell". Look at them yourself. Hell is not even in the verses you quoted.
