Is organic the way to go when purchasing food? Is it healthier? Is it Biblical?

We were not meant to consume pesticides, growth hormones and other harmful chemicals. These are not from God nor are they Biblical. But I am not telling you what to do. It is your choice what you do to your body (God's temple). Just as some people choose to smoke and eat unhealthy foods in large amounts. *hugs*

What is organic food, anyway? Though organic food can be produced with certain synthetic ingredients, it must adhere to specific standards regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Crops are generally grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, irradiation (a form of radiation used to kill bacteria), or biotechnology. Animals on organic farms eat organically grown feed, aren't confined 100 percent of the time (as they sometimes are on conventional farms), and are raised without antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.

Is organic food better for me?
Organic foods may have higher nutritional value than conventional food, according to some research. The reason: In the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants boost their production of the phytochemicals (vitamins and antioxidants) that strengthen their resistance to bugs and weeds. Some studies have linked pesticides in our food to everything from headaches to cancer to birth defects. Even low-level pesticide exposure, however, can be significantly more toxic for fetuses and children (due to their less-developed immune systems) and for pregnant women (it puts added strain on their already taxed organs), according to a report by the National Academy of Sciences.

A Report suggested always buying organic for certain produce
A report released by the Environmental Working Group EWG sparked the interest in organic produce again. The report named 12 produce being the most contaminated with pesticides and suggested consumers to always buy organic. The "dirty dozen" includes apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries.

Researchers from the Emory University in Atlanta studied urine samples of 23 elementary school-aged children. These children were followed for 15 days in which 5 of the days, the subjects were given organic foods such as organic produce, juices and grains. Researchers found significantly lower concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides in the urine samples on days when the children were given organic foods only. The result of this study was published in Environmental Health Perspectives in February 2006.

Yes, yes and yes! My garden at home is organic and mostly grown from heirloom seeds too. Even my cat is on a mostly organic diet. :yes

I had asked in another thread if one of our "resident" farmers (hint Dora and Tina) would like to start a Gardening Tips thread so we can share info.

The gardening thread would be very interesting. I don't have land though. But I could put a few pots on the balcony :shrug
I'm very interested in learning more about unmodified seeds.

In response to the second and third links on your google search:
It is evident that money has been placed before our health. Of course it helps some and hurts most.

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

i see nothing with organic , but i would advise that you grow and do it on ur own(garden), cause organic simply means no pesticides ,but if a chicken grown organically isnt' raised on hormones but is allowed to roost they eat anything, ie dead chickens, etc how much healtier is that, and i will dig more on that as a biologist friend fo mine told me that and she used to work the Florida Department of Agrculture.

Home Depot sells fertilizer that 's made from recylced septic sludge(human solid waste) and it's called organic when i learned that i definitely wont use that soil for my banana trees, i know personally what people put down the toilet.
tampons, needles etc are allo thrown in the municipal septic were i work for a vacon is used to clean out the tanks and then garbage truck is used to pick that and haul it off, i have to be vaccinated for all hepatitis(a and B) and tetanus, mmr. Job requirement

Organic is more than just no pesticides. As a matter of fact, there are natural pesticides which can be used and still you can grow organic. Soap and water is one, believe or not. Rodinal is another. Organic also means using natural fertilizers. A good composting material is your best bet. Natural manures that have been dired, like cow, horse and chicken manures are excellent also. Avoid human or pet poop and avoid any manures that are still "fresh". They contain harmful microbes and other bacteria.

Animals often eat other animals; it's a part of the food chain. Farmers of livestock should remove diseased, dead animals when they can to avoid further contamination.
