G'Day,

You probably won't hear these 2 words too often from the pulpit in many churches.

The 'hypostatic union' is a human attempt to explain how Jesus could be both God and a human being at the same time.

What is the biblical relationship of Jesus the eternal Son to Jesus the man on earth?

Not a pharase often heard from the pulpit!

I think the best explanation is Charles Wesles:-
'Our God contracted to a span, incomprehesible made man.'

We see from the gospels that Jesus was full human, he got tierd, he ate, he experienced emotions and died.
Yet he was also God, with out sin, able to walk on wter, heal the sick, create food, raise the dead all abilities of God.

Was that person on earth fully God?

Phil 2:6.Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 .rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
It depends what onemeans by fully God.
Clearly he did not have all the charateristics of God on display while he walked this earth. As we see from the transfigeration no one would have been able to avoid recognising him as God.
If he had not hidden his holiness how couls sinners been able to enter his presence?

Jesus was fully God, but he limited himselfso he could be fully human and so he could obey his Father.

WM,

'
Phil 2:6.Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage'.

This verse affirms he was God by nature. He was/is God.

He is equal with God.

It depends what one means by fully God.

Would you like to explain further as to what Jesus being 'fully God' means according to Scripture?

So far this topic has gone over like a led balloon.

Here we try to understand how Jesus was fully God from eternity and into eternity, yet when he was conceived and born of the virgin Mary, he became man, a human being with the same needs for breath, food and drink that we all need.

How did the God-man function, with his attributes, when on earth?

In my understanding, there are about 5 dimensions to this topic:
  1. Direct NT statements that Jesus was theos (God), a Greek word most often used to refer to God the father (e.g. John 1:1, 18 - in the older MSS - John 20:28).
  2. Lord is used to refer to Christ; kurios was a polite way of speaking to a superior. Today we would use the word, 'sir', to refer to that person (e.g. Matt 13:27; 21:30);
  3. Pointers to Jesus' deity (e.g. John 8:57);
  4. Jesus had attributes of deity (e.g. his eternity - John 8:58);
  5. Did he give up all or some of those attributes when he became a human being? (Phil 2:5-7).
Is any of you interested in discussing #1: The meaning (gained from the text) of direct NT statements that state Jesus Christ is God?

To get us going, let's look at John 1:18 (ERV): ' No one has ever seen God. The only Son is the one who has shown us what God is like. He is himself God and is very close to the Father'. The NKJV translates as: 'No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him'.

So, if we want to see what God the Father is like, look at Jesus and what he did on earth.

Direct NT statements that Jesus was theos (God)

For I could wish myself to be accursed from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my fellow countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom belong the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the temple service, and the promises, to whom belong the patriarchs, and from whom is the Christ according to human descent, who is God over all, blessed forever! Amen.

Sorry I forgot.

Without looking up verses, I understand it to mean the Jesus is fully God while also being fully huma.
This meant he could walk on water, heal the sick, know what people were thinking, yet he was also limited to being in one place, got tired, hungry, experienced emotions and could die. As God he could not sin and could cxome back to life.

i see a trend here a trend that's phasing out the use of the king James Bible..It's not just sad it's sickening..

ToB,

Do you read the original 1611 edition of the KJV, complete with Apocrypha?

By the way, the OP is not a KJV topic but 'Is the hypostatic union a swear word?'

I invite you to engage in discussion on how Jesus could be the God-man while on earth.

chessman,

That's an excellent statement confirming Jesus is God.

Can you think of any words from the mouth of Jesus that also explain that he is God?

amen - and this also

Hebrews 1:3

Colossians 1:15

TF,

They are 2 excellent verses to affirm the deity of Christ. With verses like this, I can never understand people like the JWs who cannot support Jesus being God:

The first human that God created, Adam, is called a “son of God.” Similarly, Jesus is called “the Son of God” because he was created with qualities like those of his Father.—Read Luke 3:38; John 1:14, 49 (Why Is Jesus Called God’s Son? JW.org)

WM,

This is great content to affirm Jesus was divine.

Since Jesus was God, how do we understand this verse from Jesus? 'No one knows when that day or time will be [of Jesus' return]. The Son and the angels in heaven don’t know when that day or time will be. Only the Father knows' (Mark 13:32 ERV) - also Matt 24:36 (ERV).

Was Jesus unable to know everything (omniscience) when on earth?

I would include John 10:28 as Truthfrees indicated. Adding the significance of when it occurred (during Hanukkah-the yearly dedication of the Second Temple of God) as a reply to the Jews ‘request’ to prove Himself Christ (a sign).

And He did prove it by destroying the Temple (i.e. His body) and then raising it up again Himself (His resurrection). Only God does that.

That statement, along with “I am the Good Shepherd”, (John 10:11,14) are both clear statements to Jews (knowing Isaiah 40:11 and Psalm 100) by Jesus that He is God. Thus their reaction.

If you think about it, claiming to be God, to a Jew, MEANT claiming to be the God of the OT Scripture. So He did just that in many ways:

“Listen to me, Jacob, and Israel, whom I called: I am he. I am the first; also I am the last. Indeed, my hand founded the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they stand in position together.
Isaiah 48:12-13 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Isaiah 48:12-13&version=LEB

Thus says Yahweh, the king of Israel, and its redeemer, Yahweh of hosts: “I am the first, and I am the last, and there is no god besides me.
Isaiah 44:6 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Isaiah 44:6&version=LEB

Claiming to be The First and The Last actually was more clear to a Jew than claiming to be a god.

So after His resurrection (His destruction and rebuilding) He had shown them the sign then claimed to be The First and The Last (i.e. God):

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
