From the way that article reads, Not really. Now Marriage is about preserving the next generation? That's not a bad idea, but how about preserving the vows YOU commited to. How about Preserving not just your children but the right kind of values they will need to bring up another generation. How about putting God back at the head of the family and letting him dictate what our minds find to be stimulating.

God alone is the hope for the American marraige. Not a pleadge to take care of the kids, not a pledge to care for your spouse, not even a commitment to love just one person. These things will keep a union together, but do not necessarily mean that they will make that union worth anything. Only by adding God and his teachings into the union can we expect to see Marraige survive.

I think you have some great points. Personally, I think marriage cannot be boiled to just one thing but many things. It is about your committment to your spouse, raising the next generation thoughtfully and responsibly, honoring God and a whole host of other things. Knowing the source this article came from, I can see why they did not focus on God directly.

I want to mention something else that is chipping away at marraige and it is something that Christians do just as commonly as non-christians. Why do we think it is funny to take cheap shots at the marriage relationship and the "typical" roles of a husband and wife? Why do Christians think it is funny to joke about Marraige being the "end of fun" or funeral. Why do we have to make pot-shots on a Wife's passion for a mature husband and call that nagging? I think this is just another way we take the marriage covenant too lightly.

When I married Caroline, I did not give up my right to an opinion as some would Joke. We make it so hard to respect the effort a marriage needs these days. Not only do we make the marraige life more difficult with all the Jokes, but we also show our children that marriage is just another casual social arrangement that we can belittle and mock. It's no wonder why marriages fail when we are teaching children that it's something that they will not enjoy and that it is something that they can joke about.
