And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.

Acts 7:2-3

Joshua 24:2-3

:confused
great question - got me reading and praying

Matthew 23:1-12 is the context

Jesus is talking about religious leaders who are not true religious leaders - they love to be honored and held in higher regard than everyone else

so it seems that these disingenuous leaders loved to be called rabbi - teacher - father - etc

Jesus was addressing this specific situation and not the general use "father" to address our dads or our ancestors - which is what Acts 7:2-3 and Joshua 24:2-3 is about

and if you think about it - if anyone who is not your father wants you to call them father what is that all about? - they want you to give them a position of authority and allegiance in your life that they probably don't deserve

true leaders don't need to fabricate a position over you with a title - their Godly behavior will cause you to trust and honor them - and all without a title

When I went to private school everyone had to stand when a teacher entered the room and refer to them as Sir or face a penalty.

Its the one word I cannot stand being called even if people are just being polite if I am a customer.

yes - negative situations do affect our perspective

sometimes i dislike a name simply because someone with that name was not a good person

i have to work through this to change my feelings about a name - especially if i meet a wonderful person with a name i don't like

but the benefit of working through all these little things is that it keeps my heart and spirit clean - Psalms 51:10

Thank goodness! I was worried that I might have to start calling my father Mom. :lol

interesting that you should say that - i call my father dad or daddy

i guess that is what i hear other people calling their dads too

i never thought about it until you made this statement

I thought about it too, and scripture says, I knew you before you were in the womb...

So we were already alive and with our Father. Our real Father. So I can understand why He would only want us to call Him Father.

(I have a speculation that we probably chose, or at least agreed to be born on earth into our specific family and circumstances. The Lord is cool like that...
But that's prolly a whole nother thread lol)

wow - never thought of that - Jeremiah 1:5 - God knew us before the womb

i wonder what that means

that is for sure a whole separate topic

Lol, they would NOT have liked me!! I would have chosen the penalty, every time; and then defied the teacher to impose it. Once the teacher was stymied, I would have taken myself to the Principal's office to repeat the process ...

Same here.

Well, I could be wrong, but I've always interpreted it to mean that the Lord already had a plan for us and knew everything about us before we were even born and what we were going to be like. Of course that's just my take on it.

Not everyone would have have known or heard Jesus say do not call anyone Father, they didn't even have the scriptures and not everyone would have ever word he spoke. Maybe Paul and other diciples didnt know so they keep using the word father, they didn't hear ever word that come put his mouth Paul wasn't even there. Its not like the Apostles were all knowing and perfect.

Also...
Sometimes rabbinical students upon graduating from one rabbi would try to become telmuhdeem of another Rabbi who had a better reputation and following. (Not all rabbi were equals and the highest order of Rabbi was the Schmeekah Rabbi...he had authority to explain the Torah/Law)
"He spoke as one having authority"
