James Dobson and Focus on the Family

I love these guys! They stand up against abortionists, gay marriage, child abuse, pornography, sexual sins, etc.. and they speak the truth biblically. I listen every morning on my way home, always a blessing.

Anyone here listen to them? A member here does not like them very much, but I have no idea why??

I dont' often listen to him(focus on the FamilY) the times their on is when i'm at work, and listening to them at work often is diffucult, but i have occasionally) I see no problem with them, certainly not a fascist or a hate monger, but a lover of Jesus

Overall, I really like their ministry. I will say that every now and then I feel that they seem to "focus on the sin" more than they "focus on the family" as far as their political stances, etc, but they seem to keep things pretty much in check.

The one thing that I really admire about Dobson is that he doesn't get paid a penny for his role leading Focus. He gets his income from the books he's written on his own, and in turn doesn't take a penny from anything Focus on the Family does. Imagine if the big shot Wall Street CEO's did THAT!

And despite being an adult, I still love "Adventures in Odyssey". I think the art of radio-theater is just neat in and of itself, and I find that show to be really interesting. Unfortunately we don't have a local station that plays it, but back in my hometown, I'd often find myself sitting in the car, parked in the driveway listening to the last 5 minutes of the show before I went inside

I actually started listening a year or two before I was saved. Dobson and his ministry were instrumental in my "choice" to accept God gift of grace and salvation.

Oh boy, does that bring back a memory. I had to drive through a blinding snowstorm to pick up my husband and I let my kids listen to AinO along the way. We picked up Steve and he was starving so we went to a restaurant. Well, we sat out in the parking lot of the restaurant for about 15 minutes in the snow while we waited for the story to end!

I love "Adventure in Oddyssey"!! I still listen to it with my daughter...I've been listening to it since the early 90's when we moved here from Mexico.

And I love Dr. Dobson...he is such a good and smart man who stands up family and life. I've been listening to Focus on the Family for years and more years, I think it is wonderful. There are no gray areas with the organization...it's black or white. I feel they have always spoken the truth according to God's word and it has been and continues to be a guide for my life. I love listening to it every night, it's all very good and I hope the Lord continues to bless them and what they do to reach the world.

This is why I like him. There are way too many prosperity teachers out there today that never touch the subject. People like Joel Osteen don't even have the word sin in their vocabulary. They are wasting people's time if they don't teach a balanced message.

I came to Christ when I realized what a hell bound sinner I was. If I didn't get some of those stern messages from good teachers, I may have never come to know Jesus. They told me what I needed to hear, not what I needed to feel comfortable.

There is another side to Dobson - I suggest you do a little research on the web. Back in the day when I listened to him he had a side-kick named Gil M. Gil has exposed Dobson for what he is.

I will let you do the research if you are interested.

It appears Gil is holding on to some anger and resentment. I was tuned in the day the announcement was made. The letter of resignation was read aloud on the broadcast. In the reading were the words that Gil was stepping away from Focus on the Family. Whether or not it was a mutual decision wasn't mentioned. What was mentioned was Gil was leaving. It also mentioned the guilt Gil had over asupposed affair and felt he couldn't continue in this ministry under the pressure of such remorse.

Now I read this from Gil?

After 10 years together, I went through a list of maybe five concerns. The last was, "There's a real problem when you terminate someone's employment and say absolutely nothing about it. It's a problem for me. People think I had an affair because you're the one that ended the relationship and you won't tell people why because you can't tell people why. After all, who fires somebody over the possibility of a false rumor? That's why I was fired. You haven't said anything publicly about me and my wife. You've cast a shadow over both of our reputations by the way you handled that."

His response? "Gil, one of the reasons I have not made a public announcement is because the best thing for Focus on the Family would be if all of our constituents thought you were still in the film department making films."

Now I read about lawsuits!?!? What about the Biblical principle against such an action?

You are right though, people should do the research and decide for themselves, as I have. After all, there are three sides to every story, with the third side being the Truth. There's also another Biblical principle that warns us not to promote rumors and gossip.

With that said, I am glad I was tuned the day it was announced because it seems it has helped me to look at this in a much more objective light and not a laser light that is meant to cut up and damage others.


Why is it that Christianity and some Christians have become good at cutting each other down but forget about building them up?
