I knew it. I told myself you'd talk about mma on this matter. I can't stop laughing:lol

And your kids mma is useless when it gets overwhelmed by the opponents mma:chin

This is kind of saying: ..right from the time of John the Baptist...
LOL

so what do you propose stand there and get beat up daily. look i have been bullied. it gets old. one day the bullied will unleash with such rage that he will likely kill the guy. bullies seldom have friends that are really couragously enough to engage or help him, thus why they are bullies!

and if he does mma chances are he aint that good if he is a bully. my son almost went to hard on six year old and had he not stopped i would have wrestled him to teach him whats its like.

Ofcourse you should stand up for yourself, but don't go overboard.

In other words, you have the right to reasonably defend yourself, but not the right to continue the "defense" when there is no longer a threat.

Don't underestimate martial arts and mma, it's what we train for.

p.s. MMA

I think standing up for yourself in general is a good skill. I didn't learn it as a kid, and the bullying continued into adulthood. It wasn't until I learned to stand up to other people that I really grew up.

So, yeah, kids should stand up for themselves, hopefully w/o violence. However, if violence is absolutely necessary, I think they should keep it to a minimum, but get the job done.

We have different approaches for this topic. We all are satisfied with our approaches.

I am comfortable with Drew's post: not paying back evil for evil. That kid musn't retaliate.

How about completely avoiding the bully? A lame idea? Maybe! Maybe not!

Our family friend shared his childhood experience. He told us He was a bully when he was in school. There was this little kid he always tormented and beat up. The kid never bothered to fight back.

One of the days he made up his mind to make life worse for his fellow kid. He caught him as usual and terribly beat him up. He expected the child to at least fight back or do anything revengeful.
What was the child's response? A tender smile and a face full of: 'I forgive you; we are still friends, arent we?'

The bully was so remorseful. He wanted to cry. He said to his fellow child: 'Now hit me back! Return those punches,' he implored.

He wouldn''t do that. He was smiling.
'I said, hit me back.'

Pipe-dream!

He pleaded forever and the friend ignored him forever. He was all the time smiling friendliness at him.

What did the bully do?
'I'm sorry.'

He ceased being a bully from that day.

I wish the world worked the way we wanted it to. The bully stories would work out like the one above, but unfortunately that's a rare occurance.

We are told to be angry, but do not sin. There is such a thing as righteous anger, otherwise there would be no immediate consequences for illegal or dangerous actions.

Yes, some schools do, but other do not.

I would rather my children defend themselves so that they know that bullying towards them will not fly.
I agree, I did not think one email would fix the problem.

I have told my daughters, don't throw the first punch, but if they hit you, you can defend yourself.
Of course, they will face the schools one strike rule.

God is the one who put the option to fight or flight in you.
The fact that we have a fight or flight instinct is hardly evidence that God is responsible for it.

As a result of the fall, we have many instincts that God is not really responsible for.

Again, "how things work out" is not the right guide to our behaviour - obedience to New Testament teachings is.

And I see no New Testament position for the "fight" option.

drew i seriously doubt you or any man would watch their loved ones die without at first attempting any means to escape or stopping them.

i live in reality. if you call the cops to stop that bully and he tases him or has to go hands on or kill him,. you are just as guilty in that act.

calling someone in to save your but in the time of trouble like paul did in acts isnt exactly pacifistic. paul invoked his rights as roman citizen and the romans were soft when they came in. they took him by force from the jews.

Let me say this, God does not expect you to stand up there and get kicked, slapped, and punched to death. God does not expect you to just lay down and let somebody kick you to death. And if anybody thinks so they are dead wrong like Drew. God is who put the defense mechanism within us. Yes that's right God put that in us. Now you want to know why God did that right ? I'm glad you asked, He put it within us so that we can protect ourselves. God also put in us the mechanism of flight, sometimes you have to run.

(Matt 6:13) And do not lead us into temptation [to fight back], But deliver us from the evil one who [is bullying me].

(Exod 14:14) "The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

(Ps 46:9-10) He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I [am] God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

How about teaching kids that the Creator of the universe is with them and ask them to pray to God in their hearts for Him to fight?

You are wrong my friend. You simply don't trust God but trust on your own hand's defense mechanism.

(Ps 91:2-7) I will say of the LORD, "[He is] my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler [And] from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth [shall be your] shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, [Nor] of the arrow [that] flies by day, [Nor] of the pestilence [that] walks in darkness, [Nor] of the destruction [that] lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; [But] it shall not come near you.

We may as well argue that God put self-centeredness and pride in us as they come just as naturally as wanting to fight. So we must then ask what is of the flesh and what is the Christian's appropriate response to the flesh? It is the latter which is often the hardest to do as it goes against our nature and is something we must develop through discipline.

What is it that we are supposed to do if someone strikes our cheek or asks for our tunic?

One more time God does not expect you to stand up there and get punched to death. I'll tell you what' you stand there and get beat to death with a pipe. I am not, help yourself go right ahead.

Since we all think we're stating what God does and does not expect us to do, do you have Scripture to back this up? Several have been given which seem to support that that is not the case.

Let me put it this way, you stand there and get beat to death with a pipe or a 2X4 I am not. God did not tell me to stand there and take that.

As I said, if we're going to argue what God does and doesn't want us to do, then we should provide Scripture to give support. Support has been given for one position but you have provided none. It is exceedingly difficult to see your position as biblical if there is no support. That's all I'm saying.
