46 years ago this month I visited my uncle and his family in La Junta Colorado while on my way driving home from Imperial Beach California Naval Station to upstate New York. I drove straight from San Diego to La Junta, stopping only briefly to gas up and grab something to eat. Took about 16 hours if I remember correctly.
After a day or two visiting we got a call from home that my grandmother - his mother - had died. He and I then drove together the rest of the way to New York for the funeral. On the way we had a great time getting acquainted, we hadn't spent much time together before then. After the funeral, he returned to Colorado, I went on to my next duty station in Italy. It wasn't until three years later that I saw my uncle again, this time at his own funeral.
I treasure that time with my uncle, and now realize how precious it was that I was able to visit that little town in Colorado and get to know my uncle as an adult.
