Okay so here's a thread on the latest on quitting smoking.

I don't want to go back to it; it's now been several years since I quit, although I do still like the smell.

What are other ppl's current experiences in the quitting side of things?

Okay so there's been a bit of voting; care to tell us, folks, how you guys are getting along with quitting cigarettes?

Never smoked. But my cousin and her husband quit cold turkey 1-1-11 I believe and they have not gone back since. They go to the gym to work out and have lost weight.

Oh I did. But I have family members who smoke. But I am lucky that I haven't smoked.

Seems to me that in a family, if dad smokes, mom may well still turn up her nose at smoking; but if mom smokes, then probably the kids will find it hard not to get into it as well. (Unless I'm missing something...)

I smoked, and have found it hard to quit. I currently use electronic cigarettes.

Oh I never tried any of those...

I like them. Not the cheap disposable kind though. I have a medium priced refillable kind. It is shaped like a hooka not a slender cig but fits in your pocket easy. It refills. Since it is just vapor and not smoke you don't hurt your lungs. I have quit coughing, and feel much better. No bronchitis anymore, and spend way less money. There are flavors. I am using fruit flavor now, but there are tobacco flavors as well. They have liquids to gradually step down on nicotine levels to 0 too.

So have you managed to cut down on nicotine so far?

Yes. I still use the same nicotine level in the fluid, but I use less fluid in general. I used to go through about a bottle a week. It is small a couple milliliters, now it last about two. One time I bought the lower nicotine stuff by accident, but didn't really notice a difference so I guess I could cut down even more if I really wanted to. I find I enjoy it.

I guess there can be a tension between the pursuit of enjoying it and the pursuit of quitting....

Correct. That is the nature of addiction. I have found that I enjoy egics, and since they do much vastly less harm, and cost much less money that I am not really motivated to quit. They are in a sense self weaning as I do use less over time.

Do you think that people can get hooked on nicotine with ecigs, who have not previously been smokers of conventional cigarettes?

Well yes they can. Nicotine is an addictive drug. There are ecigs and ecig liquids that contain no nicotine though.

The idea is not to get hooked. I guess that for some people a de-hooking means can itself become addictive. e-cigs are supposed to be more benign, anyway. I never went through an e-cig stage, though, because I quit cold turkey.

My thought is, if you don't quit altogether, cutting down on the quantity of cigarettes, or also going for a lower tar instead can be another good option.

You never know: this option might also become a stage to achieving a cold turkey quit in the end... :)

We are all different.

Blessings.

Well-I smoked cigarettes for 29 years. And drank beer and hard liquor for 10.
Now I don't consume either one-and don't want to. And it's like I've never put a cigarette or a drink up to my lips.
God's Word is True-He can set us free completely. Oh my-Yes He Can!

It was the hardest thing I ever tried to do on my own. And in His (God's) Time and Timing-the desire was gone from me in milliseconds. I waited on The Lord and didn't let Him rest until He took that desire from me. The last 2 weeks I smoked-I smoked more in 2 weeks than in a whole month! It was bad! The more I wanted to quit-the more I smoked. I'll never get to know about e-cigs. They weren't even on the market that I know of before I quit. I will say this too-I did get addicted a little while on the gum. Then eventually I went to a Christian Doctor (for a skin rash) and she knows how to pray. She prayed and shortly I was off the gum too-just like I had never chewed a piece. Oh my God is good.

Keep praying-He is listening

Ms. NeedTheLord:

Congrats. on quitting! shows it can be done.

Did you change to a lower tar during your attempts to quit? Sounds like quitting cold turkey would be the route you best recommend, though.

Blessings.

I used to smoke always when I was having beer when I was a teenager. Sometime I feel like smoking one but I don't do that anymore. It was hardest not to smoke in army, as sitting down in the forest everyone was smoking just because there was nothing else to do. I felt tempted a LOT there but didn't smoke a single one. :sohappy
