Ummm.... I'm just curious about something. You don't have to answer it if you don't want to but are you Catholic wondering? Because you have sort of given me that impression. Not like there is anything wrong with that. My mother grew up Catholic. My adoptive one that is.

I used to be Catholic before I was born again.
I used to teach kids in catechism so I know the doctrine.
Can't agree with too much stuff of theirs, but a lot of it is very good.
I'm protestant now. The Catholic Church didn't have much for me when I got saved.

First of all K, nobody starves themselves.
Second, you're not the only person in a church. This is done for others as well who may actually need to learn some self-control.

It is starving themselves, purpously not eating for days on end is unhealthy, ask any health proffessional. The body needs food to function. If I didnt purpously eat for a week I would class that as starving oneself.

All the excuses. The scripture says man cannot live on bread alone but man cannot live on spiritual bread alone either, if people don't eat they will get sick and eventually die.

Even Jesus had to eat.

Come on guys can't we all just agree to disagree? Some Christians like to participate in lent and some don't. What's the big deal? :shrugNeither one of them is wrong. It's all what a person chooses to do.

Some of us have different opinions on things and there is no hate not with me anyhow, we are still all family. We all just disagree on things. I don't hate people because of there beliefs I just don't like some peoples beliefs because there is nothing to like about them.

But no matter what we all believe the truth is still the truth if no one believes it and a lie is still a lie if everyone believes it.

Did you read what I wrote about ashes and lent? Post 20.
What's the lie??

Sorry, my comment was general not aimed specifically at you. I didnt think you lied.
No K, I know you didn't mean that I lied,,,
But that the cc is lying?
I didn't understand what about.
Or maybe you didn't mean that either...

Nothing about anyone lying, just in general the truth is the truth no matter what and a lie is a lie.

Lent is not the truth or a lie its just a man made tradition some people do for reasons I have no idea why they would need to.

I have no idea why people would fast when they have food to eat while others are less fortunate. I would just eat daily and appreciate it as the body needs food to function properly.

Oh.
Well, I tried to explain why. It helps some people spiritually.
It's based on biblical ideas. I don't think denying oneself meat on Fridays would do me any good.
I believe what Jesus said about watching what comes out of the mouth.
But the idea behind lent is worthy of consideration.

Yeah, I guess if you're into that kind of thing. I'm not personally but that doesn't mean that you or anyone else can be. Like I said before, there really is no right or wrong answer here.

The who phenomenon reminds of these verses:

Matthew 6:1-4 KJV
1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Col 2:16
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Col 2:17
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Ash Wednesday -- is it today or last week?
My son is orthodox, and is abstaining from meat -- as he has done before in Lent -- not every year though...

Remember the day before Ash Wednesday is/was FAT TUESDAY - I guess people pig out right before Lent
and Fat Tuesday has something to do with Mardi Gras... I think

Rom 14:2
For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

Rom 14:3
Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

Rom 14:4
Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

Rom 14:5
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind

Rom 14:6
He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

I am one that esteemeth every day alike

Mardi Gras (/ˈmɑːrdiɡrɑː/), also called Shrove Tuesday,[1] or Fat Tuesday,[2][3][4][5] in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which is derived from the word shrive, meaning "confess".[1]

Amen to this.
Did you read post 20? Lent has good principles behind it.
The orthodox is a good, solid church.
