long hair?

recently a friend from bible study has been inviting me to His church, after two months of "are you ready to learn the truth", I went to his church, he attends a pentacostal christian church, it was my first time at a pent. church, i am non denominational, and normally go to a non den. church, but any way, worship was awesome they had a great band and choir, the church was really friendly and welcoming.

all was going well untill, the pastor came out and sayed, "that they are proud that there women dont cut there hai,r and that they wear dresses," and I started to look around and notice that every single girl was wearing a dress, and that they all had long hair. and then he began to say that " we are not ashamed that our men wear suits and look like men, clean shaven and tight ," now this cought my attention again, so I started to scan the room and noticed that I was the only one not in a suit, wearing a polo shirt and I had long hair.

now this caught my attention, I grew up in churches like the vineyard and living waters, and we never had a dress code, or cared what you looked like, so a little embarased and upset, I talked with my friend the next day, and we talked about my long hair and my outfit, and he made me feel comfortable with my attire by saying that, "I just wear a suit because i like too", so then it was on too the scorcher,

I made a vow to god that I wouldnt cut my hair for a undetermined amount of time, now as much as I would like to cut it, ecspecially being summer and working with the long hair outside, let me warn you that there is a time and a season for everything, and summer is not the season for long hair, with this being sayed we started talking about, why his church looks down on a man having long hair, and it started a debate, he doesnt have any scripture to back up what he is saying, can anybody back up what he is saying? maybe give me a few scriptures? does anyone have the same beliefs on here as him? and if you do can you tell me why you believe that?

I dont think that god expects us to come to him in a certain way as long as we come. my bible says come as you are. I dont think I should be singled out for having long hair, it sounds like a religious spirit to me, something like the pharasies. am I wrong for feeling this way?

I would like to know because, I would like to go back they have alot of good stuff going for there church, street evangelism, bus ministry, great worship, large congregation ect. ect.

any advice, wisdom, knowledge, opinion, is much appretiated and thank you for your time.

Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.

The Bible DOES NOT condemn anyone for having long hair. In some religions hair is said to hold parts of the soul. I can explain if this isn't too far off for you. But we are Christians and the fact of the mater is: God loves us for what is within. Now if you were walking around with your private parts hanging out, that might be considered disobeying our "higher authorities" here on earth

The only reason "it is a shame" is because society places labels on human beings. In first century Greece, long hair identified a man as a homosexual. Like a man wearing a skirt or tight pants today would be labeled gay possibly. Wouldn't he?

When we are truly living, looks won't matter.

I agree with fembot I recently learned that the reason it was glorious for women to have long hair was it was common for prostitutes in that time to have shorter hair styles

The Bible says, "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is glory for her? For her hair was given to her for a covering." (1Co11:4,5)

Paul was dealing with two issues, one was culture and the other was nature. In the middle eastern culture a woman was to wear a covering (veil). Only loose women went without a veil. When certain women became Christian, they started taking off their veils and this was bringing a reproach on the Christians at large. That is the cultural side.

The nature issue is something that God Himself did. A woman's long hair was given as a sign of her original 'glory'. It was also a symbol of humility in acknowledging her role as being Adam's helpmeet. Her life was to match his, and not vice versa. This did not demean Eve. As long as she understood her role and remained humble in heart, she would enjoy all the privileges that belonged to her placement alongside Adam. (When Paul speaks of the angels, he is drawing attention to the fact that angels understand the roles of Adam and Eve.)

dear paidion I looked into the scripture that you gave me, and I read a few verses before it and after it, it is pertaining to head coverings, in praying and prophesying, and it talkes about the shame for a man to have his head covered during these times, because he is made in the likness of christ and women in the likness of man and christ in the likness of god, so is the bible refering to, (me having long hair) that im trying to have a womans covering and that it effects my prayer and prophesying? or am i totally off here?

In the middle ages many men had long hair, and so the artists depicted Jesus that way, too. Jesus was Jewish, dark and swarthy. Other than that, no one knows what He looked like. But my guess is that His hair was neither long nor short, like most of His Jewish contemporaries.

I do agree that Paul said it is a shame for a man to have long hair, because long hair was associated with homosexuals who tried to look like women by letting their hair grow long. Other early Christians strongly objected to men shaving off their beards and smoothing their skin and putting on "womanly pigments", making themselves look as much like women as possible. If these things were a shame for men back then, perhaps they still are. Nothing has changed except that these practices have become acceptable, including homosexuality itself.

No, Paidon. Please don't try and label me gullible. I can really put you in a bind right now, but I won't. Because his hair is described as being like wool, which is not familiar with caucasian hair to me, I would picture his hair black and wavy/curly. Jesus would not have had blue eyes because people that lived in that area of the world did not have blonde hair and blue eyes at the time. Especially Jews. I don't know exactly what Jesus looked like. But if you know your geography and history, you can take a good guess.
