Luke 7:6-7 King James Version (KJV)
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

Luke 7:6-7 Revised Standard Version (RSV)

6 And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.

6 Jesus came all this way and the centurion don’t let him in his house, this is likely because him being Gentile he knew that Jesus coming into his house would make the people become ritual unclean. One thing for sure is that he wasn’t keeping apart of his life from Jesus that is not what he is doing by not having him come in.

7 He had faith that simply by speaking it that healing could happen. He believed that Jesus is God and believed that His words still had the same power in His words that made the world.

Hi Clark, I've always admired this Centurion and his humble respect for the Son of God. Because of his generous dealings with the Jews of Capernaum, he was probably a Proselyte. Having no Synagogue, he probably had the Synagogue built by his soldiers at his own expense.

I find that the Centurion, because of his love for Jewish traditions, called for the elders, or sanhedrim of that town which consisted of 21 Elders or a bench of 3 which probably is who went to see Jesus. This proselyte to Jewish traditions had a nice twist to it, how he came to trust in Jesus as the healing Son of God, hmm, I don't know exactly what he thought of Jesus.

I may not know exactly what the Centurion thought of Jesus, but I do know what Jesus thought of this Centurion...."I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

I reread it in the Young's Littoral and it reads the same and if it is read in it's context, it looks to me that you are center target. As it is told the Centurion was obviously a thinking and wise man though he knew his position was hated, very much. But by the kindness in the matter of the Place of Worship and I would think other matters, the Jewish people under his jurisdiction, if not loving him, he had at the least gained their cooperation through genuine love.

It is much like my love and respect for the Vietnamese people. When I landed there on a C-141 Starlifter, before the buses with one eighth inch steel mesh covering the open window the VC were trying to kill us and on the first night they dropped Rockets and Mortars onto the Replacement Company, the 90th, I recall.

My first tour was at An Khe, in the Central Highlands and as a Specialist, Fifth Class, a Buck Sergeant before Korea and since they retired the rank in the Army. Having such a rank and having been sent to a Field Maintenance Company when My Maintenance Officer, Major Short Arm disagreed about the safety of my aircraft, I was prone to serve on the Green Line as the Locals cut away the weeds and brush from the outside giving the guards on duty a clear line of sight.

Not only that, Mama-san wanted to fatten me up because she thought me young and to skinny. They taught me to use twigs for Chop Sticks and how to eat rice with them. If I went into An Khe they did not want me to come to their house to see them, they thought I was to good of a man to be in such humble surroundings.

Nothing could have been further from the truth, I had grown up in the Wards of Houston, Texas and when I entered the Service, I live in a two room w/bath shack with my Dad.

In this case and in all cases, we are not worthy that Jesus should humble Himself and enter into my home, even today, even though He is willing and He, through the Holy Spirit, He does. Basically, we, as a people, do not realize the great sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, in our place and then He comes into where we dwell and moves His Spirit into our hearts. This Centurion's reverence for our LORD should be realized and copied into our Daily Lives.
