Abraham and his wife.... but maybe they are excused because Christianity was not yet.

I do recall Jesus telling his brothers He was not going to a festival, then going... but of course, technically, Jesus was not a Christian.

Rahab (think that was her name) from the city of Jericho lied about not having seen the Israelite spies. And she ended up being part of Jesus's lineage.
Yeah..... but like my examples, she was not really a Christian.

Sampson also lied to Delilah...... but, again, before Christianity.

Cain lied to God.

Peter lied when he said he didn't know Jesus.... again, pre-Christianity.... by a few days.

Actually, dozens of people lied in the OT.... Joseph's brothers? Then Potiphar's wife.

The 10 Commandments did exist back then. But perhaps "do not bare false witness against your neighbor" could be said to only apply to court situations?

Good points Willie.
Abraham lied and it proved to be the wrong thing to do.

As far as Jesus, if you read through John 7, you will see his brothers wanted him to go up and reveal himself to the other believers.
Jesus replied, no it is not yet my time, and did not go.
Later, he goes up secretly and does not reveal himself until half way through the festival.
That is when his time had come.

Peter lied, but again, not the thing to do.

Going back to the OP, when was it okay to lie?

Rahab was justified by her faith and obedience, not for her lying.
No where in Scripture, Old or New Testament, is lying condoned.

common sense. just because lying is recorded in the book of genesis doesn't mean that it was the right thing. remember abram lying to pharaoh and abilimech and what they said to him about that? basically do you hate me?

I just hate lying, I've never seen any good come from it in my life.

But I really cannot say what I would do to protect someone from a predator. If a child came to me and said they were being abused, I would call the police and I would find them a safe place until the police came. If their abuser showed up asking for them I would not take the chance of them being able to get their grubby hands on them, even if I HAD to lie to keep them safe. :shrug

Of course. Brought up a specific example of someone who one could possibly argue was blessed for lying--in a particular circumstance.

Any of you know of any Christian husband who would say, "Yes, Honey, those pants make your rear end look like the state of Montana." ? I'm fairly sure they would lie, instead. I know I would.

I've seen this question posed and I've got to say, in some situations it would be a sin not to lie....
The biblical example I would give would be David when he asked Johnathan to lie to Saul about why David couldn't make the banquet. Johnathan lied to his father Saul, and by lying, he found out the truth. Had he not found out the truth, he would have never knew what David already knew, ... which was that Saul wanted to kill David.

Oh wait, David wasn't a Christian... I don't think that had anything to do with it. Why? Well, lets use the good ole Nazi argument. Your a good Christian young man and your hiding a Jew in your basement when a Nazi officer comes and knocks on your door asking you if you have any Jews in your house. You can't lie, so out of your own self righteousness, you say, "Why yes, I have a Jew in my basement, for I cannot lie". Congratulations, you've just sentenced an innocent man to his death because of your self righteousness. For some reason, I don't think God approves. I don't anyway.

But what are those chances? Pretty slim, unless you live in Iraq.

But lets be real. Your girlfriend asks, "Does this make me look fat?" Go ahead, be honest. But wait..., that's subjective anyway right? Or what about that kid who tries so hard to play baseball and he's discouraged and he says, "I"m not very good am I, I should just quit". Go ahead, finish him off and crush his spirit. "Yeah kid, you pretty much suck. You should try something else, like domino's".

On the other side of the coin, if you've done something wrong, you need to admit it. Yup, I stole that, and it was wrong. You don't lie to cover up something you've done wrong.

Were those hiding Jews during the Holocaust sinning when they lied to the police?
Nope.
We often see a sin as something bad that we do, and in that since telling the truth in that situation would result in something very bad happeing. Lying in that situation isn't the sin (bad thing). Telling the truth is the sin because the truth caused harm and really, that is no truth at all.

What Christian in the Bible lied?
Ananias and Sapphira?
They both dropped dead when they lied.
Anyone else?

Colossians 3:9;
"Do not lie to one another...".
Exactly. And if we dig behind the why, we'll find that they lied for their own gain when they didn't have to.
