I used to have something similar that I kept on my desk at work. People of all ages were fascinated with it. (It really was some good fun!)
 
Actually, I was bored waiting for some people to show up for a meeting, went through my desk drawers to see what there was. Chopped up a few paper clips, pulled out a magnet and a machine nut, borrowed a sheet of blue paper, and there it is.

It looks gold-toned because I selected the blue paper as the white balance.
