When I read the article, I was hoping the writing would include a way to check a personal computer for the malware, along with a way to remove it safely.

Five years is quite a long time for a silently working malware to go undetected. Not encouraging.

That's the disconcerting aspect of all of this.

Just recently, one of the big hospitals & associated clinics in my county reported their computers had been hacked. But hey, the good news? The hackers didn't get social security numbers.

Right.

If you're running windoze, it is entirely possible. Since it is uncovered the antivirus, malware, and spyware updates will begin removing it, when possible.

I know online security and computer security is a concern.
German's take their security extremely seriously; we use encrypted e-mail clients, browsers that do no track searches and we have strict Data Privacy Laws.
These type of articles are worrying - we could have been under surveillance and some of our personal information may have been intercepted for years without our knowledge.

Security is the very reason I love my Ubuntu Operating System. For the past ten years I have not had a single Infestation and that is without Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software. From the year I left Beta Testing for MS I have been pushing Ubuntu but I must admit it is an uphill effort in the US. My people resist any change no matter how good it might be.

This is the second time I've heard about a computer virus that our Government has created.

Common sense doesn't seem to be a strong suit any longer.

It is the fastest growing OS in the world and a year or two ago the Duetch Bank converted every one of their computers, about thirty thousand, to Ubuntu in twenty-four hours with no major glitches nor interruptions in service. If you go that way, Linux Mint is a draw off of Ubuntu and their latest version was just released and as a windows user you might find the shallowest learning curve with Linux Mint and with the Cinnamon Desk Top. Yes they are both free as are almost all of the better than 1100 flavors of Linux.

Ubuntu comes, native, with the Unity Desk Top and is very much Mac Feeling.
