From what I've read over the past few years, this is the technology that will bring about the greatest changes to our lives in the next 5 years. Forget about 4K and ultra HD TV's, forget about smart phones, forget even about virtual reality. Augmented reality to poised to change everything. They are right on the cusp of the ultimate game-changer.

Microsoft HoloLens - http://www.cnet.com/products/microsoft-hololens-hands-on/

I remember seeing the first article about HoloLens in January, 2015, and I've been trying to keep up on its progress ever since. I just couldn't believe that Microsoft had been deeply researching and developing this technology for 6 years, and not a single leak made its way out of their top secret labs. The CIA can't even do that! If you haven't seen this, and you're into technology, this will amaze you!

When this arrives and others follow, it will change the way we interact with people. We will not only watch the media. We will be there. We will be a part of it. Imagine walking down the street, talking and interacting with a friend who isn't really even there with you. Imagine your entire living room becoming a video game that you are a part of. Virtual reality is fun and interesting, but to augment digital 3D images on top of the real world around you will be science fiction coming to life! Augmented reality is the bomb.

Amazing, right??

This is with about 1 year more research with the same technology. THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!! My mind is exploding! It's the stuff of Star Trek and Star Wars, and we are soooooo close!!

Yep, this IS amazing! And you're right, this is the stuff of Star Wars and Star Trek. Isn't it amazing how the science fiction of shows like that has become reality today?

Yes, it is! This is in effect teleporting to another place and interacting with the environment there. Can you imagine, instead of calling or chatting with your child who lives out of state, teleporting to them? Even cooler than that for me was in the second video where we will record events and play them back in a full size 3D holograph and even resize it. To watch yourself and others in third person will make home videos that we have today look like those old crusty black & white pictures. This potential use absolutely blows my mind! :thud

Old movies are better then most new ones.
Jason, good grief. You didn't bother to watch the videos, read the article, or even read my post if you think this is about movies or what's on TV. Please don't derail this one. Go derail something Rollo is posting at this very moment.

LOL! Reality is difficult to manage and mkes thinking people want to bet their heads against brickj walls.

You don't think entertainment, will br changed?the means of communication on star trek wasn't holographic, that was fir entertainment. Star wars used that for commo.we turned cell phones into more then just simple phones.imagine all the historical imagery I have taken but now in three dimensions.

Of course what a hologram on trek was a real object.it's the reverse of the teleporter

And I'm the one who is narrow. Mike have you written fan fiction ?

Fir star trek, star wars, and anime.?

Probably not.I can tell that you know nothing about trek as not even in the st:tos were those holograms projections but created objects.solid and able to kill you if set to.some live doctors were simply created via holographic tech on that show.

Have I written fan fiction? I guess not, because I have no idea what you're asking. Don't lock in so hard on my nod to those science fiction franchises. If the comparison falls short for you, let it go. You're obsessing about how they physically teleported on Star Trek but with HoloLens, there is not physical transport. Don't become so obsessed with the minutia that you can't appreciate this for what it is.

It's amazing to think you could have two people on opposite sides of the county interacting in the same room. Moreover, they could replay that meeting and stand by observing themselves participating in that event. Stop hyper-focusing for a minute and think about that. It's mind-boggling!

Yes but the non-techy mind has a lot of growth to complete, yet.

I'm not,I have used.. things that were in use by the military long before you even heard of.GPS .DarPA invented that.oh you made my case about movies.imagine watching a war movie while being in character? Role playing ? Mmo.sounds like the holodeck doesn't it. Cell phones, bio beds all came from star trek.not expecting transporter tech.do forgive me If I study human nature we bore easily.we are more separated despite social media.despite holograms ,while that wI'll reduce some of the text issues and lack of emotions being able to communicate. There's no substitute for personal contact.I don't see this like texting or social media but I can see some issues with it.

I get more excitement from archeological, history then I do tech.I'm sure I would bore you with those stories.I will not watch tv and spend time scanning photos, maps, and use Google Earth to find ww2 era edifice, bombing ranges.if possible I will photo them.I hear buildings talk.this is a pow camp.the tower built in the 40s is still there.I know them when I see them.the type of pows, whether italian,German ,or Japanese at this pow camp is unknown to me.

It's you who read into holograms and assumed that I was looking for that level of tech.I wasnt.people do write fan fiction and use available media. Since its now possible in enough time as costs will have to allow it.a home camera and can be used to make that type of 3d entertainment.

Whether techie or not, I'll bet this kind of stuff will be used by regular people within 10 years. Techies sooner than that.
Absolutely! Look at the high tech police shows.
As soon as the Linux/Unix World had motion control under development and Alpha Testing the Hollywood and TV crowd began to work it into the sequences of their films. I believe that when MS stops squatting on this advancement it will appear for a much larger usage by the entertainment moguls also. MS just needs to adopt a more open attitude about the world about them.

But had they gone with Bill when I perceived him moving that direction, I would still be Beta Testing their software and would not e operating outside their influence. [Secret: They could care less!]

th1b.taylor indeed it would be great if Microsoft would be more open source, but I'm all for the autonomy of a business to be operated in a way it believes isin its best interest. It's still amazing to me that not a single MS employee leaked this project over the 6-year span until it was unveiled. Not a single disgruntled employee or anyone with a hero complex.

LOL! Agreed.
