Money vs Education. Which would you choose?

We had a friendly debate with friends on the topic: Money vs Education. Majority are for quick money, no education, and prefer being illiterate; while just very few are for education.

Seems money is power...however I believe money will fail.

After I graduated high school I had aspirations of getting a music degree with teaching credentials. After a year in college I got (un)lucky enough to land a very good paying summer job. I made the regretful choice to keep the job and nix the education. I have kicked myself ever since. We now have a daughter finishing her first year in college and last fall when she started I told her that I expect one thing from her....to finish. I don't think I can stress it enough.

How much money and what kind of education?

We have one child we encouraged to stick with the money. Then if he wanted he could pay for an education in whatever field he wanted. He is doing better than most his peers both in education and money. Working can be extremely educational.

My husband took the money path. I am sure glad he did.

His brother took the education path. His wife is sure glad he did.

P31, it depends on what you want to do. Obviously you all chose careers that didn't require the degree to get started, or to have the expertise to be successful. Different story if you want to be an addictions counselor. :biggrin

I guess it all depends on where you end up in life, and what regrets, if any, you might have about choosing that path. Some people do better without a formal education and make a lot of money, and vice-versa. I certainly wish I had stuck to finishing a degree, but bad decisions and other circumstances did not allow for that. Not complaining, mind you, considering I do consider myself extremely blessed in my life. Great wife and kids, but there is that little bit of reflective regret that wonders what would have happened had I actually finished college.

Education, always education. The majority of wealthy people are educated and on average those who are educated make more than than those who are not. But even besides the money, I would rather be poor and educated than rich and ignorant.

Of course there is an argument that can be made for those who decide to enter the work force first, then while they are moving around in their chosen field they find what they really want to do, in contrast to those people who spend the first year or two of college "trying out" different majors before landing on one. I have known many people who have gone to school later in life to make it easier to move ahead in their chosen professions.
