I have been kicking around ideas as to what the topic of my next article should be. I want to go with another pirate, but am unsure of who it should be about. Please respond in the poll as to who you would be interested in finding out more about.

These are the pirates of whom I have already written:
Blackbeard (Edward Teach)
Calico Jack (John Rackham)

I have also mentioned a couple of others, but nothing as comprehensive as what has been written about these two.

K: Sshh...the Fundies might think you're endorsing the idea of men with earrings if you write about pirates! :)

(But on second thoughts, if the pirates you write about are women, then they would have the earrings already, so it's okay! because Fundie ladies wear earrings.)

It's just how some Fundamental writers do exegesis, anyway...

Alrighty, so we have one vote for Mary Reed. Any other votes coming in, or should I just run with this?

Hence the reason for researching and writing about them a bit more. Who would you be interested in finding out more about. Or I would you rather read abut a pirate hunter?

Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

This is a wonderful verse; in fact, you can center the Lord Jesus in all the things that this verse mentions.

Their stories fit within the theme of my site. I don't just write about them, I just chose to do a few pieces for now before moving on to other nautical topics. I will eventually write about the pirate hunter Jonathan Barnett.

K:

So have you looked into 'letters of marque'? These were documents under which ships which amounted to pirate ships could operate, supposedly officially, by plundering the vessels of other countries. Sometimes these ships were known as corsairs.

I suppose the nearest near-contemporary comparison would be the Contras, of Nicaragua. Though with the Sandinistas, the Contras had a revolving door relationship, at one time one group was the 'official' one, then the other.

(Two cents'.)

Yup, I am well acquainted with letters of marque, in fact I reference them in my post about the Barbary Pirates, who I do not really consider "Pirates," but Privateers, which is what they really are if they are backed by a government via letters of marque

Interesting; and what about the Trucial States? now United Arab Emirates (at one time called the Pirate Coast, I believe). Unless I'm confusing it with somewhere else....

The US navy emerged as a permanent force as a result of efforts to counter the Barbary Pirates, or whatever one calls them.

The Barbary Coast, or Pirate Coast, was along the northern coast of Africa. I can't remember reading, or hearing, about any accounts of the US military being involved in anything in the Persian Gulf at that time (the late 1700's - early 1800's). Most of the altercations the US military had with the Barbary "Pirates" was either in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Atlantic.

No, I wasn't suggesting this. I guess I didn't make a sufficient break between my ref. to the Barbary Pirates and the Persian Gulf (now referred to as the Gulf; i.e., subliminal distancing of Iran by diplomats! :) ) Whereas there are pro-Iranian Shiites in Bahrein...

And so it goes...

(But I digress...)

Not sure if I am much help because I know nothing about this topic. This has nothing to do with what you are asking about but something that might be an interesting read would be comparing the movie pirates to the actual pirates. What do the movies get right and what makes them really far away from the truth?

Very intriguing thought. I will definitely think about that for future posts.

btw, nice improvement to your logo.
