Years ago, the proprietor of this store would provide a temporary sleeping place for immigrants until they could find a place for themselves. He had cots on the mezzanine above the store, often as many as nine people he took in.

When he retired, he donated the store to the local historical society, which left everything the way he left it, down to the ledgers and the products on the shelves.
