Somehow I don't think that saying is always true. It just happens to be garage sale season again in my area, and while I'm always polite about it when I refuse to buy anything, some of the things I find are just junk and should be in the trash instead of the sale. Especially when I find broken or missing items. Does anybody else get what I'm saying?

You never know what people will want until you put it on display. You can always toss whatever doesn't sell afterward.

True, that's a very good point, but what's the use of selling broken objects and missing pieces? That should have been tossed before the sale. I already know for a fact that nobody is going to want anything that's broken, or something that has something missing out of it like a set or something.

How do you know this for a fact?

A friend of mine buys old broken automobiles and restores them. Sometimes he has to find other old broken vehicles to get parts from and sometimes he has to use his skills to repair what he has.

Okay, I will give you that much. You got me there. However, I was thinking more along the lines like the toys for children that I've seen in the past being sold or DVD's/CD's that don't work anymore. (and yes they still sell both) And would you want to play a game that didn't have all of the pieces included in it?

I think the point is that we just never know. What I view as trash may be a life saver for another. I remember one time when I was at the Minnesota State Fair and a young woman walked by, dug into a trash can, and pulled out part of a sandwich or something that she found and began to eat it. I wanted to offer to buy her something fresh but it all happened so fast she was there and gone in a flash.

I don't know but I wonder of used defective DVDs/CDs can be recycled? I remember playing with broken toys when I was a child some 50 years ago or so. We turned them into new toys sometimes. My cribbage board is missing most of the colored pins but it doesn't stop us from using it to play the game. We use toothpicks, stick matches, or anything else we can find to work as a pin. I've even seen toddlers play with dolls that are missing limbs. They don't care. They are still able to play using their imaginations just the same.

Although it is rather disgusting that the woman was eating out of the trashcan, my mother just made a good point about how that's all some people who are starving can eat. It's amazing how much stuff we take for granted.

You never know what a person can do with broken yard sale stuff especially if they are a making crafts of art out of old CD's, toys, games or even broken glassware. Some people will buy cheap scrap metal things and make money recycling. One mans junk can be turned into many treasures.

Well, I never heard of making things out of all the old things you mentioned, but I guess that's where recycling comes into play.

I saw once how they make fancy bowls out of old records but I can't remember how they did it

The old 78s and 45s are making a come back here as well as record players. Is it the same in US?

Some will take chip glass or clay pots and break them up and make mosaic table tops and old records like Tessa said are still collected and like CD's if they are unplayable many make decor art for there walls. I watch a little HGTV, LOL.

As antique collectables yes. In fact, I just saw a record collection at one of the garage sales that I went today since there was like a few of them on the same street. :) Do you have garage sales in the UK by any chance?

I mean new ones when I say they are making a come back. Recordings being made on records as well as cds.
Garage sales are few and far between here. We have a lot of car boot sales.

Car boot sale?? Is that like a garage sale in your car?? Or is it a sale that just happens to have cars and boots?? :lol I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused. :confused

Yes like a garage sale. They all pack their cars with stuff and congregate in a specific place. They sell stuff they bring in their car boot. Very popular

It is junk. Who wants to buy a half missing jigsaw puzzle, it would be like ordering a hamburger and asking for no bun and no meat pattie.

If people sell broken and not working items and people buy them its all ligit because a deal is a deal unless its falsely advertised. Everyone just need remember test and check before they buy.
