How much righteousness to I have to do?

I have the same instruction manual as you do.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
2 Timothy 3:16

We are told we are to become the righteousness of God in Christ. That is God's desire for each of us.

  • we might become the righteousness of God in Him

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

  • Those who practice righteousness are righteous.
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 1 John 3:7

  • The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Christians who live immoral unrighteous lives, will not inherit the kingdom of God.

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

  • the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God

We are warned not to be partakers of God's wrath with the sons of disobedience.

3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
Ephesians 5:3-7

  • Therefore do not be partakers with them.

I did not charge you with that. I was making a statement. If you feel like it was directed toward you then it is your own conscience - I would listen to it.

I have no need to go back and forth with you. That is why I said what I did. John is clear. The words we read are clear. The person who does righteousness is righteous, the one who practices sin is of the devil. There is no way to confuse that simple truth, and the only way to confuse it is if 'someone' twists it. Are you twisting it to mean something it does not say?

1Jo 3:4-10
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Do you believe that someone who abides in Him can keep on sinning? Do you believe that someone who practices sin can be of God?

Why do you continue to send yourself to hell with such theology?
...If you sin just once, and we all know we sin a lot....we don't meet the salvation gospel you presented.

You didn't answer my question...I'll turn it up a notch for you....How much righteousness do I have to do?

Why do you continue to send yourself to hell with such theology?

I quoted 1 John 3:4-10. What do you find offensive about what John says? I did not make any gospel presentations.

You didn't answer my question...I'll turn it up a notch for you....How much righteousness do I have to do?

I answered you, with scripture.

We are told we are to become the righteousness of God in Christ. That is God's desire for each of us.

  • we might become the righteousness of God in Him

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

That's why we are told to study to show ourselves approved unto God.

15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 2 Timothy 2:15-16

The scriptures are the instruction manual for us to be instructed in righteousness.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

A babe in Christ is not expected to walk in the righteousness that a person who is 20 years old in the Lord, and so on.

There is not a set number or quantifiable percentage or degree that is set, because God judges each one of us according to His wisdom in this matter.

This reminds me of the qualification that is required to become an SAS operative [similar to Navy Seals].

At the end they are given a map and compass and survival knife and dropped off in some remote jungle and told they are to be at a certain point miles away, that is marked on their map.

They are told they have a certain amount of time to reach their destination, but are not told what that time limit is.

So they push themselves as hard as possible striving to reach their destination, against everything the jungle can throw at them, not knowing how much time they have to succeed in reaching their goal.

Few become SAS operatives.

  • Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:14

Paul said it this way -

Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:26

Why does it seem so hard to separate the idea of works for salvation from works of the Spirit?

Are some trying to justify not doing any good works at all? Don't give to the church, the Pastor may make a car payment with it. Don't give to poor on the street, they may buy alcohol or drugs with it...Don't be led of the Spirit, that's occultism...and on and on and on...

These works debate threads are baffling to me. The fervency of the proclamations of oh don't do any good works because then you would be trapped in legalism...amaze me because it ignores so many other scriptures and teaches people that they don't have to obey God, it's ok to be almost luke warm because I have one scripture...Wow...just wow.

You're still pushing a works based theology. You push your righteousness gets you saved.....Sorry, I don't subscribe to that gospel. My righteousness belongs to Christ Jesus

The righteousness I have belongs to Christ and was imputed to me.

There are many ways the scriptures express the concept of practicing righteousness

  • Works of obedience;
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? James 2:21-22

  • The obedience of faith.
But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
Romans 16:26

  • Practicing righteousness
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 1 John 3:7

  • Obeying the truth.
22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 1 Peter 1;22

8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, Romans 2:8

  • Walking according to the Spirit.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

  • Faith working, [expressing itself] by love.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Galatians 5:6

  • Led by the Spirit
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14

These are just a few of the phrases that refer to practicing righteousness. Not our righteousness, but the righteousness of Christ Jesus who dwells in our hearts by faith, expressing Himself through our lives.
