LOUISVILLE, Ky.  A Kentucky pastor is inviting people to bring their guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment.

New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church on June 27, a Saturday.

An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety.

Church pastor Ken Pagano says guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors. He says recent church shootings make it necessary to promote safe gun ownership.

Marian McClure Taylor is executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches.

She says churches work to prevent violent harm and promote peace, but most "allow for arms to be taken up under certain conditions."

:lol

I don't read that Jesus included "Teaching them to handle their weapons responsibly" in His words at the end of Matthew 28.

Unfortunately the visable church has lost its purpose and revelance at a spiritual level. The fight has become natural at a national political level. This is why Americal will fall.

HI! Come on in! Tonight, we're teaching on the 2nd amendment, then maybe we'll talk about Jesus a little. Got your Bible and revolver? Great!! :biggrin

It just wouldn't feel right to me, Brian. I don't think it's appropriate at all. I mean, is it a church or a militant group?

I agree, but that desn't stop people from entering churches and shooting pastors.

Do you think only militant groups should have guns?

Our church has uniformed police doing security, so I feel no need for others to have theirs. Especially the whole congregation, lol. I think this situation took things a little far. :)

well Brian you very well know what I think about gun laws ;) but I'll say that even if I was in favour of regualr civillians having gun ownership, this is going too far.

In theory, allowing private citizens to carry guns and weaponry is a wonderful thing for preventing governments from becoming repressive. In essence, it's the same reason that the US and several western countries have piles and piles of nuclear weapons. It's not that we're going to just go out and use them, it's that if someone thinks they're going to try and take us over, we have the means at hand to prevent that. That's why the US founding fathers made that part of the Bill of Rights. By allowing the people to maintain arms, we ensure that our government is always in check and that they don't become some repressive regime like North Korea.

The problem comes into play when, ehem, shall we say less than intelligent people, misuse that right to bear arms and neglect the purpose it was written for. On one hand, we have gangs out there misusing their right to own guns, killing each other and innocents. On the other hand, there have been several times in history when the citizens of the US should have stormed capitol hill with their arms demanding their rights be preserved. So instead of serving it's purpose, we now have a nation slipping into an oppressive form of socialism while at the same time people are killing other people with the very tools they should be using to defend their liberties with.

Me? I'm all for gun ownership. I have a shotgun and I'm not going to hand it over any time soon. At the same time, I'm also a responsible adult who knows the purpose of weaponry and I have educated myself to ensure that my gun is never mishandled or improperly used. I recognize that this is not the case for a lot of gun owners.

As far as bringing your gun to church, I don't see the reason, unless you're meeting to plan something involving guns. After all, the point of church is to connect with God, and while a colt .45 can definitely send you to see Jesus mighty quickly, I strongly doubt that's the sort of connection to God you want to experience in church. :biggrin

Bingo. Mindsets like these IMO play into the hands of the enemies of the church, who accuse us of being violent rednecks. :halo
