This week turned idiotic at work. I ended up drug into a co-worker's faking of an injury to get worker's comp and an easier job! When it started, I was his only friend in the building. Now, he does not even have me anymore - and I told him so.

Not sure I have the energy to get into it... been coming home and burying myself in Japanese study to relieve the stress.

I suspect that, in the long run, he has now sealed his fate and will eventually be gone.

What a week! :eeeekkk

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

My relationship with my boss is WAY BETTER now, and I have noticed that much of management is more talkative to me now. I realized that my friendship with this screwball has given others the idea that I am on his side or "one like him". :shame

I guess I have made it clear (with a public rant Wednesday) that such is NOT the case. The way I have been treated is not bad, but the past three days have been really different - managers all thru the building talk to me in the break room now. The R&D manager even let me in on a big corporate secret yesterday. He also told me he wants to go for a ride on Blood Mountain sometime in my car (me driving, that is).

Odd how we can be "guilty by association".

So, how would YOU like to be this idiot - and have NOT ONE FRIEND at work? Oddly, he does not seem to care.
But then, I DID say he is a screwball.

It must have been a really really bad week granny says i am sorry... :smt056

Really, ( oh guard your reaction)....you do need green tea and shiatsu ......:shame

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

Work can certainly be extremely stressful indeed. Guard your reactions and emotions.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

Well, my co-working IS a screwball, but the truth is, he is no idiot. This guy knows EXACTLY how to work the system, and is doing so very well I think back to things he has said to me at lunches we shared, and I am just amazed at the immaturity of someone over the age of 50, such as him. I KNOW what he wants, and now I know how he will obtain it.

To expect that he can blackmail management into promoting him is astounding to me. I had no idea that the world contained such people, outside of the cast of a sitcom! But given the corporate environment, and the various well-intentioned labor laws, I predict he will never be fired. I also expect him to work tirelessly and 'wear down' management until they put him in a position he wants. I told a few co-workers this on friday and they think I am nuts - but I am sure he will never be fired and he WILL get what he wants.

And it occurs to me that being friendless at work, while an inconvenience for him, is not the big roadblock it would be for most of us. I find him to be, almost, psychotic. (Speaking as a father of a clinically psychotic son).

the army years ago would promote or not promote you on this idea of guilty by association.

Yes, it's scary, and it's abuse of position, and he's likely to commit perjury too.

There're such people, and yes, some "take" the corporation and some "make" the corporation. Neither is good, both thwart true morality.

Pray for us all that we don't compromise our morals in work or in life. The truth will eventually be all we have, may we all be well acquainted with the Truth that Saves.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

So he's still up front, working in a cubicle - he's been there 5 days now, entering inventory numbers into the computer. But today, he showed up in a white shirt and tie - this is actually a "taboo" thing to do, believe it or not. Corporate policy is "we are business casual around here", they even tell you that before your interview. The only ties you see are on the V.P. and two national sales managers - and THEN only for special visitors.

Anyway, the V.P. walked up to him this morning as soon as he entered the building and asked him what the reason was that he was "so spiffed up".

His answer? "Oh, just trying to feel better about myself". Within 1/2 hour, this story was all over the building. He's clueless, at age 50 - maybe it's early dementia?

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

Mark, I know you have your own wealth of experience in the work force, but mine has taught me to stay as far away from such office drama as possible. It's not good to hitch yourself to a sinking ship, but it often seems to not bode well even when you're supporting its attack. I think management loses confidence in someone who gets invoked, even when they support their purpose. I find it's best to be uninvolved and focused on my own responsibilities. two cents. Be careful.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

I totally agree.

And believe me, I am working hard at not getting too involved. But the senior engineer (My boss) cornered me again today about him, he's TRYING to build a case to rid himself of this guy, because we NEED good people to do the work and this guy is "charged" against my boss's budget.

This puts me in a weird spot. Like I told the boss in an email, I avoid such crap, and I want HIM to come to HIS OWN conclusions. But when I made that clear two weeks ago, he said "Yes, but I need your input to KNOW what is going on."

I know that I impressed him week before last when I told him what this guy had accomplished, without passing judgement or editorializing. (He had done about an hour's work all day, and the boss even said, "Yea, that should have taken an hour or so, what else did he do?")

Anyway, I have plenty to do this week, and I will leave most of this nonsense to the office manager/assistant office manager and others up front to deal with.

But is it fun to vent here, and probably good therapy.

I sure found it amusing that the V.P. cornered him today. That story made it all over the building quickly. I just can't believe the stuff that goes on in a "professional" environment.

But thanks for re-anchoring me.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

... Wow. Today I was given a cool and interesting assignment... I'll be going on a trip out of state in two weeks to fix some trouble at a customer's sites.

Interestingly, the boss is going with me. I'd rather go alone and show him I can handle this... but I don't mind his going along, either.

I have made my point: that I am in agreement with others that "Larry" is a mess. Now all I have to do, is show my new boss that it's time I was sent out and given real responsibilities. Six months seems like long enough to wait... but that is another topic (or did he question my judgement previously because he thought I was "Larry 2" or "larry-sympathetic"???

You probably know this ....

That's encouraging! But six months would be really early for me. Customers can vary widely: just think how the other worker might act, if he were a customer!

Still, it's really good that they trust you to work in front of a customer. Just let the manager handle any serious negotiation of the customer, and discuss things with him.

A manager might also go along so he can discuss things with you out of the office, too. He's buying-into your trustworthiness, and sometimes it can be hard to know how to respond. Let him jump in if there're any questions that he detects would be politically charged.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

Actually, I've been in this industry for 30 years now... it is idiotic that he thinks I need help.

He even let it slip that upper management jumped on him for sending me out with another guy in March. When our expense reports got to the home office, and they saw we were on the same job after I'd been with the company over four months... they bit his head off. (I was screened by the home office first, when I applied for the job - they know my track record and qualifications.)

But, again, the assignment is one I've been waiting for, so I count it as something encouraging.

Re: MAJOR blow up at work !!!!

I'd like to, but we have 18 boxes to carry that are about the size of a counter top microwave oven. :sad I can get ONE in my car with my tools - and that's it.

(Hey, we could UPS the boxes up there and.... no, wait, need four wheel drive to access at least one of the sites. Oh well, I liked the Xterra I rented for the last trip!)
