Reba, I don`t think I`m much of an inspiration but I do find ALL OF YOU an inspiration. It is actually very nice to walk through and process this in my mind with you. With my family in America, they are scared so I can`t process things with them. With my family and friends here, it is important to keep each other encouraged so I can`t process things with them either. So all of you have been a blessing to me because I can process thoughts with you that I can`t with others. So I do appreciate all the listening ears although I`m a little embarrassed taking up so much of a thread just focused on me. I find it a bit self centered on my part so I apologize for that. I`m normally not the type of person that likes to draw too much attention to myself.
I've known Reba a long time, she's right now quit arguing about it.

PJT, I do hope that we, as your family in Christ, can do what we can to help you through this. It's not being self-centered at all...it's receiving in what I'm sure that you have given freely to others when they've been in need.

Regarding the fingernails, here's a couple of links...not much information I'm afraid, but they do mention that radiation therapy can cause black streaks in nails. Chemotherapy is also mentioned as something that will cause nails to blacken.

Mainly I knew this because my mom experienced some darkening of her fingernails when she was taking radiation therapy for her breast cancer. The doctor told her it was a side effect some people get. Again, it wasn't associated with an unsafe level of radiation, just as a side effect some get when their body is processing more radiation than it is used to.

Handy, thank for the information. I had already concluded this is somehow related to the plant explosion. There is no other explanation for my fingernails turning black. I had no proof to back up my conclusion but I knew fingernails don`t just turn black overnight. Besides we women have instincts given by God and my instincts were clearly saying this is related. So it`s nice to have information to backup my instincts.

Today I`m a bit concerned though because it is raining. Again we get contradictions, we are told all is safe but don`t let rain water touch you. If all is safe, why can`t rain touch us? Anyway, today is a national holiday in Japan so normally my husband could stay home but his company made a mistake and he and some others have been chosen to represent the company and go to another company to apologize which means my husband has to be out in the rain. Please pray he will be okay. He`s a bit careless with the radiation because he just listens to the Japanese news that all is okay so protecting from the rain does not feel highly important to him. I wish it were me having to go instead of him because I would be more careful! I have asked him to be careful though but he`s a man.

Theo, thank you so much for taking the time to research this for me. That is very kind and touching. May God bless you for you goodness.

Yes, Jason that is the case you are ALL a wonderful support!

Hitch, :)! You gave me a little laugh today and that is good medicine! Proverbs 17:22 "A joyful heart is good medicine"

well then since it cant be but either beta or alpha radiation wear the rain coat and then toss it if you have to go out.

Thank you Handy for the links I will read them.

As for our present situation, there are still food, gas, and daily essential shortages, but yesterday my neighbor somehow got ahold of some bread. I think her daughter sent it to her and she shared it with me. My goodness, I brought it home and said I felt like we received manna from Heaven! It was a big blessing to have a piece of bread!!!

I have good news, another ministry heard about my idea of hosting families from Miyagi and contacted me. They like the idea and want to try it. They said they have been going in Miyagi with some supplies but the situation is daunting. People are continuing to die simply because they have no water or heat. People can survive without food for a certain amount of time but without heat people are getting hypothermia and pneumonia and without water of course people dehydrate and die. There was a case that 30 people needless died simply because they got wet and had no change of clothes. The self defense force found this group all wet and shivering, wet to get a truck to change their location, came back and they were all dead simply from hypothermia. A simple change of clothes could have saved their lives. So the people there are now dying in sort of a needless way. If we can get them out of this situation it is best. My location is not the best place because of food and gas shortages but it is luxury compared to where they are so I am going to start to try and work with this ministry getting people to host families.

It's so heartbreaking to hear that more are dying for such a simple thing of being wet with no change of clothing.

I truly support you in your vision of ministry. If you can think of any practical way an Idaho housewife can help out...let me know!!!

It is, indeed, a horrible situation. But in the middle of all this death and destruction, they found an 80 year old woman and her 16 year old grandson alive yesterday.

Handy, the best thing you and anyone can do is pray. The plants started releasing smoke again yesterday. We thought is was about to get all under control and then more radioactive material was released and workers had to flee the site. I think they are back to work now, but the drama just keeps going on. On top of that, of course is all the victims of the tsunami. Those who are lucky enough to even get to a hospital are even dying in the hospitals because a lot of the supplies were washed away there and there are more patients than beds so they are piled up on the floor in the halls. And still in the evacuation centers there`s no water. It`s a terrible situation.

Theo, yes, a teen and his grandmother were rescued! In a way, I think they were blessed to be trapped in the home because they had food and water which they would not have had in an evacuation center. Once they ran out, they were found and put in a hospital. So in a way, I think they were very blessed, but I`m sure being trapped in that rubble with no way to get out on their own was terrifying especially with the continual aftershocks!

Jason, I wish you could tell my husband that! It`s raining again today and like yesterday my husband darted out the door with his head uncovered all I can do is ask that God have mercy on my husband and that the Japanese news reports are right that all is safe. I kept my children home today but other mothers are sending their children to school in the rain so my husband is not alone, and I know these children they will play in the rain and the boys will not want to bother with umbrellas. I doubt the majority of mothers will be sending children with raincoats. May God have mercy on these children!

I just saw the news and workers have not returned to the plant yet because there is still radioactive smoke coming out.

Also the US embassy is now passing out potassium iodide but only to government workers. It has told US citizens to ask the local government or a doctor for some but it will not give any to citizens! The problem with this is the embassy knows you can`t go to a doctor in Japan and say give me KI and they will do it. And they also know the government is not handing it out. On the other hand, other countries are giving KI to its citizens. I`m a little disappointed in the US for this. It would have been better if they just quietly gave it to gov. workers instead of advertising they were giving it out but excluding citizens.

garbage bags will protect from alpha but not beta.

Pjt, in all of your updates, what if fear to read most of all, is you begin to let this get the best of you. Take this as advice from an unwise, unskilled, unlicensed therapist... It just seems that you should settle in your heart a few things that appear clear.

1. It's going to be a long time before you are back to any normalcy.
2. There is very little in your control.
3. You're going to make it to the next day, and the next, and the next.

They seem to oppose each other, but I believe it can and needs to be done. You need to accept that for the foreseeable future, this will be your life. I've worked around medicine enough to see the patients who hang on every new news. They get their hopes up, no cure, their hopes go dashing down. It's a roller coaster that eats them up. If you can set your sights far WHILE taking each next day as it comes AND keep "oil in you lantern", I believe you'll be helping yourself with things that are in your control.

Much Love to you, pjt.

You are right Mike. I was thinking today along the same lines that I have got to somehow get back into a routine. I`m debating if that means just following the Japanese pattern of throwing aside the umbrella and mask, and going out in the rain like others or to maintain precautions until the plants get fixed. If it means to just stop watching the news and just get on with life or to continue monitoring the situation. I am not sure, but Spring break starts in 2 days so I will have my hands busy with neighborhood children visiting, trying to work with this ministry helping the evacuees, and Easter is coming so I want to prepare for that so I think being busy with these things will be a good way to help me keep perspective and also hopefully allow me to be an encouragment to others here around me. Tomorrow I will go to my son`s graduation and then see my husband off on a business trip to Okinawa so I`ve got to hold down the fort and move on.

Japan is still all over the news. Are you home/in port or out?

Still out to sea. Buisness is pretty much as usual for me and Yuki is doing well at her parents house. In any case we are both fine. I'll be sure to let you know if there are any changes.

(Yuki's parents live in Tokyo).

Ok, I think of you two often and the events of the past week sure enhanced that. I get a lot of questions about you two - well, I HAVE gotten a lot of them this week. I followed the nuclear story closely, mostly on MIT's website - I didn't think it' would be long before it was not much of a story, but scary the way they were reporting it.

My next play is friday/saturday/sunday - I play an aging rock star with a heart for kids!

Glad to hear that you have a better understanding of the situation than the "Swollen Talking Heads" on the news. The media was blowing this situation way out of proportion. Most of the levels in the readings I've been taking are so minute that industry doesn't even recognize them as harmful. (YES DAD I AM THE CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, & RADIOLOGICAL WARFARE TECHNICIAN ON BOARD, ITS PART OF MY JOB DESCRIPTION.) In any case, I hope your new play goes well.... Break a leg and what not!

(Emphasis his)

Kevin is not worried for himself OR Yuki.

I have just read this entire thread and my heart just aches for those suffering in Japan! I am so sorry you have had to endure such horrible conditions. I want to help but I don't know how. I am praying for you. It might be a silly question, I don't know, but would it be possible to send nonperishables to you and your family? Things you could eat without needing electricity or water? I just want to do something. I will pray that God will bless your efforts and guide you. You are wonderful for wanting to help others! If there is anything I can do/send, please let me know! God Bless you PJT!
