Erdogan: Recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is ‘red line’ for Muslims

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the Trump administration on Tuesday that recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is a “red line” for Muslims.

Erdogan, while speaking to Parliament, said such step by President Trump would force Turkey to cut off all diplomatic ties with Israel. He pledged to rally other Muslim countries to oppose any move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The White House has been considering recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite growing calls from the Middle East and Europe to reconsider the move. The possible recognition might come this week.

Turkey is among the latest nations to publicly voice their opposition to the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish State, some saying it will hinder the possibility of the peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians and will be an insult to the Muslim world.

The Palestinian leadership said Tuesday that they will “stop contacts” with the U.S. if Trump goes forward with the change. Palestinian officials also called for mass protests in the event of the recognition.

The Organization for Islamic Cooperation, an umbrella organization of Muslim countries, said Monday that the move would constitute “naked aggression” against the Arab and Muslim world.

In Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron told Trump during a telephone call on Monday that he was “concerned” about the plan and asked to reconsider the move, the Jerusalem Post reported.

“Mr. Macron reaffirmed that the status of Jerusalem must be resolved through peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, particularly those relating to the establishment of two states,” Macron’s office said.

The opposition surrounds East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in 1967 after Arab nations launched an all-out attack against the state, the home of a large Muslim population. Both Israel and Palestinian leaders see Jerusalem as their country’s rightful capital.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    Thoughts/opinions anyone?
Should we be concerned what muslim countries think about this?
Should a sovereign nation be dictated to when it comes to choosing its own capital city?

Why Trump's promise to move US embassy to Jerusalem is so controversial

Officials: Trump might declare Jerusalem the Israeli capital

    Close
President Trump could officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital before Christmas.

Like presidents before him, Trump expressed his support for Israel during his presidential campaign and said the embassy should be moved to “the eternal capital for the Jewish people, Jerusalem.”

Trump’s announcement is expected to come as soon as next week after months of deliberation.

However, several Muslim groups and nations have expressed concern over the possible recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that moving the capital is a “red line” for Muslims and such an action would result in Turkey severing its diplomatic ties with Israel.

Read on to find out why the decision is so contentious — and why it hasn’t been accomplished yet.

Officials: Trump might declare Jerusalem the Israeli capital
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is considering recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, officials say, a highly charged declaration that risks inflaming tensions across the Middle East but would be a way to offset a likely decision delaying his campaign promise to move the U.S. embassy there.

Trump's announcement is expected next week and follows months of internal deliberations that grew particularly intense in recent days, officials familiar with the talks said Thursday. They described the president as intent on fulfilling his pledge to move the embassy but also mindful that doing so could set back his aim of forging a long-elusive peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, who claim part of Jerusalem as the capital of an eventual state.

The officials, who weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the outlines of Trump's plan emerged from a meeting of his top national security advisers at the White House on Monday. Trump himself was expected to drop by the meeting for 15 or 20 minutes. He ended up staying for at least an hour and grew increasingly animated during the session, according to two officials briefed on what happened.

Trump is likely to issue a waiver on moving the embassy by Monday, officials said, though they cautioned that the president could always decide otherwise.

Is not the US still throwing money at the Palestinians? If so, then this boast seems unlikely.

Dems blast Trump for Jerusalem decision despite past support
    [IMG]
By Brooke Singman | Fox News

Some of the top congressional Democrats blasting President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. Embassy there have in fact supported that very position in the past.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., penned a letter to the president last week, urging him not to move the embassy. Feinstein’s letter said the move would “spark violence, further alienate the United States and undermine the prospects of a two-state solution.”

“The future of Jerusalem is an issue that should be decided by Israel and the Palestinians, not unilaterally by the United States,” Feinstein wrote.

But Feinstein was among those who voted for a 1995 law passed by Congress that required “the relocation of the United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.” The measure also required the U.S. recognize the city as the capital of Israel.

I probably should have put this in either laugh of the day or idiot of the day threads......it qualifies for both.

Everything's a "red line" for Muslims.
There is no "good time" to recognize the FACT that Jerusalem is Israel's capitol and always has been. Whenever it would be done, the usual suspects would be up in arms making a big stink.

Yeah, right, Diane. Funny how you did a 180 on that because you recently called for recognizing Jerusalem as the capitol. The problem isn't where the capitol is; it's that Trump has done what YOU said should be done. Feinstein doesn't give a rat's patoot about the Israelis or the Arabs; she just hates Trump because, as a democrat, that's what she is expected to do.

That's like Israel telling us that they will only recognize Philadelphia as the US capital.
And the "Palestinians" are a fabrication invented after the 1967 war when the Jews too back the rest of Jerusalem and all the land up to the Jordan River. At that point, the Jordanian government refused to allow their citizens living on the west side of the river to cross over end enter their own country. (Jordan) Instead, they invented the "Palestinian People" who never existed up until that point in time.

And having a "2-state solution" would be like giving North Korea the Louisiana Purchase. It would make Israel indefensible when they are attacked by those lovely people of peace who want every Jew dead.

Yeah. Muslim leaders will only keep a treaty only as long as it takes for them to gain a position of supposed superiority. Those foolish and blind persons we call Dems willfully ignore the demonstrable fact that Muslim nations cannot be trusted to keep any treaty with Israel. They do have a religious mandate to seek Israel's destruction. That takes precedence for them over any promises made.
