I've played pretty much most of the resident evil games, which were a lot of fun.

But are those style of games considered sinful?

That's a good question -

Me personally? I have loads of tolerance for such things (games and stuff). Lol, I can't count how many hours I played "Diablo" when it first came out. But my children were sheltered and fed and clothed (well taken care of). I would make them leave the room for the worst parts, being sensitive to them, and their needs for protection and all that. Our bills and obligations to the community were met. I wasn't gaming while neglecting other stuff. Still - there was this one part and we had to go down the stairs in an abandoned church. We'd work our way down levels. One stair case after another, each marking a greater level of difficulty. On the 3rd level things got truly horrific. That's where we met the BUTCHER! (Boss Mon). It was the first big battle for the newb to the game and Blizzard put a lot of effort into making it as gore-a-fied (gory) as they could. Talk about active imaginations. Of course the boys would be just around the corner sneaking peeks even during the worst parts (while my attention was focused on the screen and I was running for my life(!). It did give us something to talk over at supper. That's for sure. And really? They were going to be exposed to much more in public school soon enough.

My kids were not raised to be "hot house tomatoes," protected from even the slightest wind. But I have known some very lovely people who were very well protected growing up and parts of my jaded self are still jealous. You probably know people who would shy away (run away?) from Resident Evil too.

Parents were in uproar (back in that day) because their kids were be exposed to things better left unmentionable here. I'm pretty sure it won't bother you to click the "Spoiler" below but for the sake of some of the more tender conscious ones, it's hidden just underneath. Don't click unless you know what you're doing, please:

So I'm not going to be able to say, "It is sin," but would rather point you toward prayerfully searching your heart and asking God to help you hear Him well in this, and in all things (including our entertainment choices). We are to consider Him in all things and that is exactly what I hear you doing when you ask about it here on CF.net.

Here's something else to consider:
This link IS safe to click on: TOPICAL BIBLE: "Is all sin the same?"

If you happen on a favorite Scripture from the link (The Topical link, not the hidden The Butcher :lol2) I'd love to hear about it. "Our Strength comes from His Joy over us!"

Good morning rpguy, I haven't played that game Resident Evil, but a game offers its participants tests and building of skills that can satisfy the urge for competition, and a cheap pastime. Over the years I've heard those that would put down movies like the Wizard of Oz, or other scary movies which I also enjoy. Did I really believe them? Of course not.

I now play Blizzard's Daiblo and delight in beating it with lower times and power; I'm challenging me. Start worrying if you start idolizing objects of the games; my thoughts anyway.:wave2

Yes, that can happen.

Ok thanks, good to know.

I think it has more to do with how you respond to the game and how much time you spend on it than the game itself.

If you'd normally read your bible but stop doing that to play RE (or any other game) it is a sin.
If it takes away large amounts of time you would normally spend with your family it is a sin-
If it makes you aggressive or in other ways negatively affects how you treat others it is a sin.

...but the same would be true for other things than games as well.

Recently, this came across my attention because my Wife and I have a 12 year old that we're bringing up because of the death of his Mother. He certainly qualifies as a user of these games. Since he (Jordan) had a big attitude change for the worst, we believe that there is certainly a positive request to be watchful parent for these adverse changes.

Here is a website that gives good information. https://nypost.com/2016/08/27/its-digital-heroin-how-screens-turn-kids-into-psychotic-junkies/

Interesting, that makes pretty good sense. Where would it go if we took this line of thought to it's logical conclusion? Romans 14:23?

"... for whatsoever is not of faith is sin./"

(I'm not calling anybody with this, just thinking it through. I play games)

If it's not of faith then it is sin. I don't think that there's any room to doubt that, it's scripture. We're supposed to be, being led by the Spirit. The Spirit has never led me to play any games. In fact, at times I get convicted when I'm turning a game on, and I'm sitiing there thinking this time would be better spent in His Word. For awhile there, I wouldn't allow myself to play any more until I read another chapter in His Word, then when I died again (in the game), then read another chapter. I don't do that anymore. I can rationalize it out to where it seems like a small thing, but I do get convicted still. I'm thinking that this might be one of those things...if I have to ask, then I already know the answer.

More like Resident Gory...

My ex Brother-In-Law (sister's ex hubby) was a Hollywood Movie Producer wanna-be. His movie was entitled, "Little Cory Gory," but it never caught on. Big corporations ripped him off of his rights to his own movie (yeah, 'Unheard of,' --not). The production value was excellent but the subject matter? Worse than questionable. Objectionable is more like it. There's a big appetite for such things.

some names matter Act_4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Hey Jesus, thought i would give ya call to see if you would like to drop by and play a few rounds of Resident Evil ....

I thought of that after posting, lol. We are in Christ, Christ is in us...literally. We are not alone and have never been alone. So would you sit down and play a game with Jesus in the room? That's just a wee bit scary...

rp, We consider this about those things. Would we be ashamed if Christ appeared at what ever we are doing. This is the way a "born again believer" walks in this age. Not everyone who says they are a Christian are not always what they say they are.

OK...
Since I'm the resident obstinate person...

There are no hard and fast rules for Christians except the obvious ones.
Like "no lying, no stealing and etc"

Your video game is just one of many activities that normal and irrational teenagers and young guys play. (My own son being an irrational young man just like you)

The Jews had a very Legalistic form of worship...They even had to measure the water they used for ceremonial hand washing rituals.
The Gentiles joining this sect of Judaism known today as Christianity regularly ate bacon and pork chops (Jews wouldn't ever touch pork) and seen absolutely nothing wrong with this staple of their diet.
Jesus created a New Covenant with mankind with his death and resurrection. Sealed with his own blood...
And video games aren't specifically listed in this New Covenant.

But Paul was asked about all these practices that Jews tried to get the Gentiles to follow and had one answer.

Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial.

What this means to you in today's world... (Yes, I'm finally getting around to the point)

Why are you asking about this game?
Is involvement with this game causing you pause for particular reasons? I've seen the fantasy/sci-fi movies. (I like them)

But I've also seen things that seem like "good activities" actually be subjugating to the identities of people. They get so wrapped up in their careers and hobbies that God gets put on a back burner.

Your relationship with God is like a parachute in a plane that's going to crash. Putting this "parachute" on a side seat while you finish this level on the game...Kinda dumb eh? But people do it all the time.

But then again putting the game in your pocket while hugging your parachute ain't a bad idea either.

would you sit down and play a game with Jesus in the room? That's just a wee bit scary...

Metaphors reign where mysteries reside...

I recently (two years ago) quit smoking. But before quitting, and IMHO, Grace would sufficiently cover me to the point where I could lift 'holy hands' unto Him, even with tar stained fingers, and while at home, with a lit cigarette in between my fingers. I say, "while at home," because we are supposed to consider the conscious of our weaker brother and sister so as to not become a stone of stumbling. Trust me, I'm not saying it's okay to sin. Not even daring to imply such a thing. It is absolutely not okay. It's sin, after all, and it doesn't matter what I say, we have a higher law -AND- that law, the Law of God, is being written into the fleshly tablets of our hearts, not again on stone and that is my point. Right there.

God does see all things, after-all. So yes, not only would I play with "Jesus in the room," I have played with His Spirit in me. Haven't you?

Please don't misconstrue what I am trying to say though, if it is sin (to you) then it is sin (for you) to do it.
Here's more (all true):
Luke 12:47
That servant who knows his master's will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows.

John 9:41
"If you were blind," Jesus replied, "you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains."

2 Peter 2:21
It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and turned away from the holy commandment passed on to them.

(See also: Romans 14:23 and thereabouts as well as Titus 1:5; 1Cor 8:7; Acts 15:20 to continue to study. Then go from there)
Example: I just now posted and included quotes and links but I did not reference the version (KJV) or (ESV), for example. Is that sin? I can not pretend that I do not know the preferences of some of the people on this site, but I can say (and do say) that I know what is behind the law. The version that I quoted is indeed Public Domain. There is no trespass with regard to man's law. But what about the ToS? Let's take a gander, shall we? Shall I be 'convicted' by the ToS? It doesn't matter. We know the higher law. We're also blessed to be governed by a Terms of Service that complies significantly (if not, indeed, in every way) with the Spirit of the Law.

Comment by Sparrow: There is no intent to put down neither Christianity nor its basic tenets here.

9) Do not promote a religion or belief other than Biblical and historical Christianity. (ToS 2.2)
You will not post any messages; links, images or photos promoting another religion. Atheism is considered a "belief" for the purposes of this rule. This is a Christian Forum as the name suggests.
Discussion of Full Preterism, Universal Reconciliation, Universal Salvation, Serpent seed, Dual Seed or Two-Seedline doctrine will be allowed only in the 1 on 1 Debate Forum.

2.2: No active promotion of other Faiths is allowed:

You will not post any messages; links, images or photos that promote a religion or belief other than Biblical and historical Christianity (atheism is considered a "belief" for the purposes of this rule). Discussion of these doctrines are is fine, as long as the beliefs foreign to Christianity (as defined above) are not actively promoted or held in balance with orthodox Christianity. This includes Full Preterism, Universal Reconciliation, Universal Salvation, Serpent seed, Dual Seed or Two-Seedline doctrine where discussion is limited to and only allowed in the 1 on 1 Debate Forum. This is a Christian Forum as the name suggests.

Non-Christians will not create threads inviting members to ask them about their belief systems such as "Ask the Atheist" or "Ask the Agnostic". Such threads are seen as a means to promote other faiths.

Only scripture from accepted Christian bibles will be allowed to be posted on this board. The New World Translation and Book of Mormon are not considered Christian material on this site. Discussion about other, questionable sources , documents, writings or material is acceptable but will not be permitted to be used as a basis of support within a debate or discussion.

Discussion of Catholic doctrine is limited and will only be allowed in the One on One Debate Forum and End Times forum only. RCC content in the End Times forum should relate to End Times beliefs. Do not start new topics elsewhere or sway existing threads toward a discussion or debate that is may be viewed as ‘Catholic’ in nature.

Discussions of conspiracy theories often lead to slander and hostile debate. Therefore, discussion of conspiracy theories is prohibited.

Discussion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) is also limited and will only be allowed in Christian Talk & Advice, and/or the Bible Study forum. We understand the need to discuss LGBT issues, and to provide support for those struggling with such issues. This restriction is in place because experience has taught us that many are unable to debate this in a Godly manner, or and without promoting sin in one form or another. We do welcome posts for support or prayer, or sincere Biblical discussions.

Comment by Sparrow: I think I'm okay so far, unless somebody declares Gaming and/or Blizzard's Diablo® a religion.
This is subject to Mod discretion *of course. But they know me pretty well. It's not my intent to push here, just taking the path toward the end. I'll hit the Post Reply button and we'll know soon enough
