I'm scheduled for rotator cuff surgery on April 13th. I have two fully torn muscles and possibly a tendon. Not looking forward to this. I've had two ACL reconstructions, but the knee is a much simpler joint than the shoulder. I'll be the big 5-0 in a couple of weeks, so I'm no spring chicken, and I'm not quite ready to be put out to pasture either.

I've heard enough horror stories about this procedure to make me anxious about what I'll go through.

Has anyone had this done? If so, can you tell me about your experience. On the scale of excruciating to "I want to die excruciating", how was the pain after the anesthesia wore off and through your recovery? How long was the recovery? In the end, would you say it was a success, and were you happy you went through it?

Thanks in advance! :wave

YUP had mine done... 2006 i was 60 that year... The after surgery pain was intense BUT short lived ... a few days.. of intense then no big deal pain... follow the dr instructions.,. i have 3 one inch scars . follow through with PT.. My tendon was completely tore my age and sex they suggested not to try and repair it .. having done it and how much better my shoulder is ... knowing what i know i would do it again..

Brother Mike, having a good doctor is imperative in knowing the truth. He's probably witnessed countless recoveries and should tell you the truth of what to expect. You need the surgery, let's trust the Lord to get you through it, and bless you in the process.
Praying for you in Jesus' name.

Thank you, Eugene but I'd rather hear from the people like reba who have been on the receiving end of what surgeons dish out rather than the surgeons who do these week in and week out. :yes

Here I am to save the day!!

But it'll cost you Mike...

1. What is a rotator cuff?
2. My tendon is almost cut through in my upper arm.
3. What's the difference? My doc tells me to leave everything alone.
4. What are your symptoms?

IOW, I'm trying to get info from YOU
Not the other way around!!

Oh. And stop being a baby and worrying about pain.
Have you ever had a baby??
Or a kidney stone?

Lucky for you, there's something called Pain Medication.
Yeah. It makes the pain go away.

My understanding is that there are 5 muscles connected to bone by tendons that make up the rotator cuff. Two of my muscles are fully torn. I'm in moderate pain every day since mid November. It's not nearly as bad as it was for the first few weeks. And I can't lift my arm higher than shoulder height. I ain't living the rest of my life like this, hopefully.

Pulling out the ultimate trump card, eh? :cool2
And you actually enjoy worrying?
It sucks. It sucks so bad. It's not often I intentionally head into an ouchy. It's the first few days after the anesthesia wears off, the weeks after where I can't shower or do anything with it, and the months after where I'll be rehabbing it while trying to be productive back at work.
Missing one thing.sawsall ,drill, and circular saw.
We've all seen the videos of orthopedic surgery. It literally looks like wood shop in high school. They treat the body and bones like their hacking at a birdhouse. :eek2

Hi Mike
I had a tendon problem this past year (or two? - time flies when you're having fun).
I was told something about the muscle, but I can't remember. I like forgetting some things.

I felt the pain in my upper arm but they tell me it starts in the shoulder.
All the same symptoms like you have. Had to get someone to help me with cleaning the house. (what a sacrifice!!)

Went to therapy once or twice a week. One doctor told me to stop because it was making it worse. Not an ortho - a radiologist, of all things!

He turned out to be right. I felt better when I stopped the therapy and eventually the pain went away and I could raise my arm better now. They tell me this could come and go.

We're all different and have different problems.... just thought I'd mention it.

Blessings

wondering thanks. I wish we were the same with this. I stopped PT about a month ago and had no improvement.

Good times. What a drag is getting old. :)
