Hi all - In an effort to "Be of Good Cheer" (aka Think Positive), this thread should be the opposite of the other one I started about a month ago. Share your stories of favorite jobs, great bosses or even just one thing about your job that makes the rest of it worthwhile.

Thanks!

Since I retired from the National Guard of Florida may I share why I reenlisted so many times?

Go for it!
I reenlisted in 99,02 for the comraderie.whike then I wanted a retirement,in 02,I had 11 years in ,the unit morale is what made me stay in.

Once I hit 20,my letter came,I didn't have to stay in after any enlisted oath .I would have ets instead of retired this past November instead of June for a retirement. I decided to retire because it was too far of a drive.I do miss it .it's had its good and bad times.

About 15 years ago I was working as a service advisor for our company. As a service advisor, my job was to assist service technicians with troubleshooting and scheduling their trips. My job also included taking phone calls from our customers and you can imagine that most of those were because they were experiencing difficulties and needed technical help.

One day it was a particularly busy day with more than usual customer calls. About midway through the afternoon I got a call from a customer that went something like this.

[phone rings]
[me] Douglas Machine, this is Bob. How may I help you?

[customer in a somewhat quiet and solemn voice] Last week we installed one of your machines....We chose to install it ourselves....and....we had to make a few.....alterations and adjustments....

By now my mind was already beginning to fear the worst thinking, okay, they tried installing the machine themselves, they ran into some difficulties, made their own "on-the-fly" design changes, and now the machine isn't working properly. I was preparing myself for the worst wondering what went wrong.

[customer continued...] Once we got through all the issues we fired up the machine....

So here it comes....

[customer continued...] and it ran.

[me momentary silence while I waited for the bad news] Okay?

[customer] No, it ran. It worked perfectly. It was the best machine installation we have ever had!

I was in shock and didn't know what to say. He played me perfectly and we had a great laugh at that one.

Here's another fun incident that happened at my job. This also happened while I was a service advisor.

One day I got a phone call from an outside line. So I answered it. The voice on the other end introduced himself and his company name and told me he needed a replacement part but couldn't identify it on the machine assembly drawings. I asked what the machine serial number was so I could get the drawings and see if I could help him find the balloon for the part he needed.

Back then, the drawings were in paper so I got the file and unfolded a large drawing about 5 feet square. When I asked him to point me in the right direction he said, "I'm trying to get the part number of the knibler pin." and then gave me directions to help me see where it was located on the print. I had never heard of a "knibler pin" before so I had no idea what he was asking about.

After a few minutes I realized that there was a bit of an echo in the voice of the person I was speaking to, almost as if I was hearing the conversation in stereo. Turned out that one of my colleagues in the next cubicle over was my customer pulling a prank on me! He dialed in to my number using an outside line. How he managed to keep such a straight face up until that point is beyond my understanding. We had a good laugh with that one too and still talked about it from time to time until he retired a couple years ago.

I have one that happened yesterday. At work, I go a lady's house to fix her a/c unit and she says the indoor unit makes a rumbling sound. The only thing it was, was the blower housing screws had all vibrated loose, so I tightened them up. No more noise.

I bring her down to the unit and ask if that's better. She said yes of course! Thank you, what was it? So I told her it was loose screws, a minimal repair, with a minimal charge.

And she starts Praising the Lord and tells me she had been praying it would be a small thing, because they couldn't handle a big a/c repair bill right now...and I instantly knew that I had invited our Lord to go to work with me today, that my work would be good, that there would be happy customers...

So we had prayed in agreement for the same thing, and so I told her this. More praising of the Lord!

It pays to invite the Lord to go with you to work (or everywhere), because one is inclined to work better in the presence of the Lord, so customers are happy, the company looks good for it, I as a technician look good for it...and God gets the glory and praise! Everybody wins!

Scripture says, we are to work as unto the Lord.
So Jesus is my customer, lol!

I love my job, what I do and the people I work with.
A few years ago when I lost my daughter, I pretty much checked out mentally for a few months. My boss and co- workers covered for me while I "recovered" and knowing I love Camaro's, he was able to get me a new Camaro SS for 2 weeks to help brighten my day.

When the company I work for restructured, he supported me applying for a different job by making phone calls etc. It really made me feel good.
3 years ago I made a jump from liaison to developer. I hadn't worked in Oracle in 20 years, but my employer gave me the chance and so far, so good. Writing the code is the easy part, knowing where all the data is and how it tries together is the challenging part

I remember a time I worked a job for a while. We were in training and I had met this nice Catholic girl that quit without notice and I kind of wish I could have said farewell at least. I would sit with her at lunch and one day at lunch time an atheist sat at our table talking to us. Soon enough, a Christian from a church in town sat at the table and flat out confronted me and said, "So, what about those people who have never heard of Jesus? God wouldn't shut them out of Heaven if they were good, right?" I am thinking he overheard me talking with my Catholic friend a few lunchtimes before. I thought, "I can answer him, but this may cost me my job."

I answered him and each time he had a question, God gave me his wisdom and I could always bring up a Bible verse to go with what I said. I was terrified and nervous, but because God put it in my heart to answer, I did. Many tables peered over at a Christian loudly asking what to most may have been complicated questions. The room was quiet, but I am glad he asked those questions. Maybe it reached the atheist at our table that day. Maybe the conversation reached others that heard. That experience had me feeling that I had done something with purpose (unlike the job I was doing at the time). I heard the situation did reach HR because someone complained, but nothing ever came of it.

That was the most purposeful day I ever felt that I had at a job.

Luminous_Rose ,

I had a similar experience about 2 years ago. Our team went out for ice cream and a Muslim co- worker was telling us about one of their religious holidays. It reminded me of the Jewish holiday Purim and next thing I know, we are talking about Saul and David and how Israel got put in the position for Esther to speak to the King in the first place.

I was surprised how many of the biblical characters are spoken about in the Koran.
Anyway, the whole car went silent as all our co-workers listened and it spurred future conversations with others.

I've liked all of my long term jobs. The best ever was when I fostered children.
One particular 15 year old lad I always wonder what became of him.
His father was a teacher and his mother left the country. His father had no time for him and this poor lad became a bit wild. The state (this was in Australia) asked me to foster him. I really loved this lad. My children were only very young and He was marvellous with them.
One of the elderly men from church had nowhere to stay so I brought him home with me. While staying with my husband and me the lad went into his bedroom and stole the man's money. He wouldn't admit it and the elderly man became ill , he had a bad heart.
The police found his money hidden in the lad's photo album, behind photos.
The next day the police came back looking for him, he had set fire to the school where his father worked. He did that twice.
I gave him a bible and took him to church with me every week.
The police arranged for him to fly to New Zealand to live with his mother, if he hadn't have gone they would have arrested him and charged him with arson. He took the bible on the plane with him.
The police said the lad would never forget me because I was the only one who had ever shown him any love.
I will never forget him and I pray he kept on reading that bible and came to love the Lord.

Fostering was the most rewarding job ever and the happiest time of my life.

What an interesting story! What mercy this young man was given and I hope he made the most of it. Hopefully the reunification with his mother helped him. I am glad you got to share Jesus with him! Sometimes it is brief seasons like this that can lead someone to God!

It is so interesting what God can do through us! I am glad you could reach out to your co-workers!

Now That's very interesting what I wrote this morning. I wsnted to add a bit more to the story, but I had to hurry out the door to work.

So anyway, I was saying Jesus is my Customer (because we do our work as unto the Lord.) I also invited Jesus to go with me to work like I usually do...
So I get to the shop and find out that my customer for the day...is The Church of Christ, in massilon Ohio!

That blew my mind! They have 4 residential style a/c units and I replaced an evap coil under warranty for them on one unit. I got it done for them and it's perfect thanks to the Lord. He helped at the end. It wasn't miraculously easy, lol so I asked for help from the Lord.

So amazing that God provided you with an understanding employer in such a difficult time and I'm sorry to hear you lost your daughter!
I'm glad your new role is working out too! Surviving in this modern work environment means having to be flexible and willing to learn.
Thanks for sharing!

Ha! I love coincidences like that. Makes me believe God has a sense of humor!

Love all these replies and stories of people not afraid to share their faith at work! The world today seems so fractured. Its like everyone has a line that you can't cross, so we have to tip-toe around and keep everything PC. I bet there are people of deep faith working side by side in offices/jobs around the world but they keep it to themselves. :)

Thanks for sharing everyone!

I am sorry to hear about your loss =( I can't even imagine with kids of my own. I am glad you have an understanding employer and co-workers that were supportive.

Jesus has a great sense of humor. Some is in scripture. I asked Him on the way to work what shall we do today? How to touch someone or help with His Love...He didn't even tell me where we were going lol. (Or else I didn't hear Him)
