I bet that first step in business for yourself isn't much different than mine: cash outlay now, not much time to build a cash reserve as an employee, then little coming in that you can be sure of.

Take a job working for somebody else, then when you're in financial position to start on your own it kills you to lose that steady paycheck. But if you survive to your first good job, you'll make as much from that as you would all week as an employee.

In other words, change is stressful.

Start as a contractor?

You're a plumber too? Great! Go after it!
Yeah I cut my teeth on plumbing. Then after quitting a plumbing job (another unscrupulous employer) I decided to go into a heating shop and see what happened, lol. My dad was a Master Plumber and had his own business most of his career. (I think I disappointed him. He wanted me to be a master plumber...but I don't draw well and by the time I was ready to take a contractor test. ..I took the mechanical test instead of the plumbing!)
I could prolly pass the master plumbing test, I can plumb from underground to rooftop, but I noticed early on that the heat & air guys got more respect than the plumbers. The smart ones, lol. But plumbing is hard work. I know where the red wire goes so I don't have to work so hard anymore, lol!

I can't start as a contractor, all the bills are due! But zI should walk in the licensing office and show them my walletful of licenses from Colorado, and see...is it a fee only for me or will I have to test? I need to know that.

I did get another job. I had two applications and preliminary interviews yesterday. The one I liked better called me back today to interview again tomorrow.

I think that means I got the job, and we talk $ tomorrow.
These guys are a real service company, the evidence was e everywhere lol. Nice shop.

He said they do mostly residential and some commercial, with occasional installs...and THAT is exactly what I am looking for. Now as long as he doesn't beat me up too bad tomorrow things should get better fast for me.
I guess I didn't ask for too much money this time cuz he called me back, yay! Praise the Lord! :sohappy

Hooray! Hope you get good news tomorrow! Its a hard pill to swallow but a job for less money than you hoped for is still better than no job!

I thought about that. and I don't think I want absolute top dollar because then...they'd heap so much on me that I'd go nuts and have no summer at all! I can go bottom end of reasonable and be fine, lol!

Lord, please give Edward that job? And Edward, remember to take Jesus with you :)

You could also ask the boss about all your licenses; can't hurt that he knows your qualifications, right? Then when you talk money in terms of starting pay vs after you've "proved yourself," he knows you mean business.

I'll remember!
It was the bosses son that interviewed me. He zeroed right in on my (NATE) shoulder patch and confessed to taking the test and failing it...(it took me 3 tries!)

And he liked that I can fix commercial roof top units. Maybe I should have applied for Service Manager?! Maybe I'll mention that tomorrow lol.

Got some feedback at work today. It wasn't bad but just suggestion for improved. At first I was like ok, not a problem. I haven't been doing this long and so I need to get in the groove of how they want this done.
But for probably the last hour now I've been stewing over it. WHY is my brain like this? It's just pride and fear.
Now I'm thinking of excuses (well, they should have trained me better or oh I've only been here so many weeks!) and worried about whether I can do this job and how I didn't really want this one.

I need prayer! To help turn off this voice in my head that wants to murmur and complain about everything!

My interview was going good until it came time to talk money, then he started complaining about how much I asked for, lol. He said he'd call me Friday with a decision. It sounded to like code talk for no job. So I prayed about it and put it at Jesus feet...and started scouting other companies just in case...

He called me today and said let's go to work...:sohappy

WOOHOO! great news! congrats! I hope you like it there!

My first Pastor addressed this as there is no switch on the back of our head that we can flip and then we automatically obey God. If you find it let me know where it is, ok?

Jesus prayed that His Disciples Faith wouldn't fail. I think that's much more in line with your situation here. Various "voices" we deal with. We can learn 'the sound of our Master's voice.' Strength is the property of sticking with it. Making that right choice is also understanding in Proverbs, at least in the KJV. It's the result of those right choices that we're all after ...

Prolly the wrong thread for a good job story, but still...lol

I just finished my first week at the new job. It was great. I started Monday. They even gave me the 4th of July off PAID after only 2 days on the job!

This is a goood company. Good people. A family owned & operated outfit. The boss is a Brother in Christ!
He asked me why in the world a guy would move from Colorado to Ohio...
So I told him the testimony of how God told me to move here...we was in the shop and people was all around so I kinda didn't want to, but I wanted to tell him the truth, so did.

I get the feeling that he wanted to talk more about it, he was interested...But people kept interrupting us with business stuff. He did ask what church I've found here...But I only went to one church here one time...We'll prolly talk more later.

I ran some service calls for them alone today for the first time. I have been working with the other service tech but they were just too busy and had too many service calls so had to split us up today.

They don't have a service truck for me yet. (I think they bought one, but it needs to get lettered up first...so they put me into their extra box truck until it gets done, lol!)

The boss called me in late afternoon and offered to give me a 200 advance on my check...(since I won't get my 1st check until next friday)...AND deduct $50 a week until it's covered, so it won't run me short next week. How cool is that?! Said he wanted to make sure I'd have money for the weekend and stuff...

The man cares. I'm seriously impressed with him and his company. God bless those people! I'm praising the Lord for this new job. It seems to be everything I was looking for, and he hired me for 25% more than I made at the other company!

That's amazing news Edward! I'm so glad to hear you ended up in a good position and with a boss who you can talk to about your faith!

Maybe I should start another thread "Share your great job stories"
