Hi - So I'm about a month into my new job after a period of unemployment and there are things about this one that make me long for the job I was laid off from. I'm being trained by the person who I'm replacing. The CEO is a very odd guy and everyone around him makes excuses for his behavior like "he's a really great guy once you get past <insert terrible personality trait here>"
I'm naturally an introvert but to be in the working world you have to play the part of the extrovert, which I can do, but there is always the dreaded office happy hour. We had one today - on a Tuesday!

So I'm in need of a pep talk. There are no perfect jobs, right? Everyone goes through this right? Share your terrible workplace stories with me

Not necessarily a terrible job story, but one that I will most certainly never experience again. About 8 years ago I was working for a company that made energy drinks that were sold via multi-level marketing (no I was not a distributor). The president of the company used to be a distributor for another company and thought he would try his hand at running his own company. With the help of a wealthy backer (who also happened to be the CEO). Well the president's wife was also an officer of the company. This is where the story comes in. One day while working in my cubicle (I worked in the compliance department), she came over to introduce herself to me. I knew she was the president's wife and figured she must be head of the marketing department. Well, she introduced herself as the Chief Happiness Officer. Yup, the Chief Happiness Officer. As you can imagine I thought it was a joke and kind of chuckled. She said she was serious. I then wondered if I had actually started working for some real company or a sorority of some kind.

The company eventually got purchased by another, and I got laid off about 9 months after starting. Not at all upset about being let go. The company was spiraling badly, with no real direction.

I get fired a lot.
I got fired last Friday from a job I hated.

I'm a highly skilled Construction Electrician. And the job I got fired from was a low skill job. Everyone was fighting and snarking at each other. Degrading each other over not being fast enough. I'm over 50...I ain't fast anymore but I'm very accurate and my work doesn't have to be redone.
I was glad to be fired...but that is why I am in the field I am in.
I change jobs a lot.
One of the worst was at a gasoline tank truck filling station. I was 30 feet off the ground in blowing sleet in a boom lift. I had double pneumonia. The guy I was working with was a jerk too. I was miserable. I then went to a natural gas factory where they store natural gas. I couldn't breathe and I was again outside...fever and chills.

This time the contractor got fired. It was funny...yes, I was unemployed again but the guy's who would fire me got fired before I did.

LOL! Yup, that's how the corporate world tries to loosen up. The receptionist at my new company has a title like that and the great irony is that she's actually not that happy herself!

Thanks for sharing!

Once upon a time, I'm still a wage cuck. The end.

Well you've gotta eat and have a roof over your head, but yes, I hear you. I don't think I have what it takes to be a successful business person myself and I don't play the lottery . . so I'm kind of stuck working for that next paycheck.

Best for people get a trade and work for themselves.

I find it amazing how you can call a tradesman and what you give them for an hours work is what you earn in two days at a regular job.

Yes, one of my favorite Christmas movies is National Lampoon's christmas whatever. I love the premise that he's working this middle management job but was waiting for the bonus check so he could put in a new pool and fly the whole family in for the summer. I know its just a movie but still, that would never ever happen these days!

I'd say I'm sorry to hear that but you sound pretty okay with it!
And congratulations! You win first place for the most depressing work conditions with bonus points for going to work with double pneumonia :)

That's why I'm on the verge of leaving society to live in a cave and grow my own food.

Excellent point! Yes, plumbing and anything electrical . . always seems like it shouldn't cost that much.
And pest control! I just had to treat my house for termites myself because I was out of work and nearly cried when they gave me the quote (I got quotes from multiple companies).

Ha! Yes this world is tough but I think living in a cave would be tougher. Have you ever tried to grow your own food? I was gardening a lot during my unemployment because its a hobby and I had so much time on my hands. I decided to branch out (no pun intended) from growing flowers to growing edible food. I have some sugar snap peas going but yielded only about 10 pods. They were delicious but if I was depending on that to survive I would be dead now.

I love Genesis 12 where Abraham is going exactly where the Lord told him to go and worshiping him every step of the way but then you get to verse 10 "And there was a famine in the land". We live in a fallen world so there is trouble around every corner!

Uh yeah I'm fine with it. Got a new job Monday. I worked today at a great job. This one should last a while.

Living in a cave and growing own food sounds great, but realistically I would rather give some of my time in exchange for some currency so i can have a rodent free roof over my head, a comfortable bed, and some power.

The positives of living stone age is free rent and free food. I would grow a big beard because I would be too lazy to shave with stones. And when my clothes wear out I would have to make clothes from leaves.

That's awesome! Congrats!
Like I said...I get fired a lot.
Sometimes I go through periods where I'm fired at least once a week if not twice...other times I get stuck on a job...(I like getting fired) I am itenerant by nature.

But more importantly I get no identity from the thing I do for an income. Nor does my self worth come from an employer. Because unless they can make a huge profit off my labor...so they have a vested interest in telling me how little I am worth to them...and others in the jobsite next to me can choose to target me as a stepping stone or an obstacle to get removed...for them to have a more entrenched position for someone who devalues everyone to begin with.

But in reality my self worth and value come from the Creator...who loves me and considers me special.

I have found in my life that when people work for someone else people are just a replaceable number. Its always hard to get a payrise because companies know they can just get someone else to do the job if you quit.

Yes, that's the way to look at it! I had to take a pay cut and slightly lower position for this new job and I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed but I'm trying to remember that at the end of the line my job title isn't going to matter. Jesus knows who I am and I'm covered, so how could a link'din page compare to that?!

Which is such a shame because for a relatively small amount they can keep someone on who has the skills and the history with the company instead of having to train a new person who might turn out to be not as valuable an asset.
