Here's a thought and I would be keen to see where people sit on this.

I recently made a claim through Medicare (Australia's universal healthcare system) and ticked a box for consent for organ donation. ie, after I die I am happy to give my organs for transplants. Didn't give it much thought as I have also signed one on my NSW (State) Driver's Licence.

I got home today after work to find an Australian Organ Donor Card in the mail for me as I am now on a national register run by the Commonwealth Government. Reading the attached letter, it means that they can have Bone Tissue, Eye Tissue, Heart, Heart Valves, Kidneys, Liver, Pancreas & Skin Tissue.

Is there something similar in the US? If so, should Christians sign up?

I personally don't have a problem.

In the Bible we are promised a new body, so what do I need with the old one anyway and the new one will be perfect. What happens if my organs go to a non-Christian, should I care?

Some have been saying we should be seperate from the world, and I've given my consent for the world to seperate me!! :gah

Thoughts?

No, I don’t think there is anything wrong with doing anything like that. As far as a non-believer getting your spare parts, I thank it is okay because what if the unsaved person gets saved later on in life. You would have played a part in prolonging his life long enough for him to get saved, otherwise he might have died and went to hell. In heaven I'm sure he would thank you for giving him a second chance.

I think it is really selfish not to donate your organs. When we die they will decay anyway, and if they can be used to save someone's life then I think it is our obligation as Christians to give life.

Also, to answer your other question...yes, there is an organ donor system in the U.S. I don't know how other states do it, but here in Georgia when you get your drivers license, there is a box that you check that says whether or not you'll donate your organs. If you don't do it, the license is $15...if you donate it is only $8.

I have absolutely no problems with organ donations. I choose to be cremated and if any organ I have can be used to save a life, than I have fulfilled a function of The Body, post death. :amen

Ditto for me, I've always believed in organ donation, and after my f-i-l's major surgery, our family benefited from organ donation. My father-in-law had what is known as a "whipple" and it is a major surgery indeed. Basically what they did was to remove all or part of about every organ in his mid-section and "rewire" what was left together. To complicate things he developed Valley Fever which hindered the healing process. Because the healing process was being hindered, the skin simply wouldn't regenerate over the surgical site. His doctor explained to us that if they couldn't find a match for the skin tissue, he most likely would die. It was really touch and go and my husband took a leave of absence from work to stay with his mom at the hospital. Then a match was found, he went back into surgery to have the donated skin tissue put in and was finally "closed up". He was in the hospital for over 6 months.

That was 11 years ago. Because he lived, my children get to live right next door to their Grandpa and have the benefit of growing up with his wisdom and love. I'm so glad that God kept him with us for these last 11 years and I pray for the family who lost their loved son who donated his skin to my f-i-l.

Thank you all for your thoughts & opinions. Seems we are all of one mind on this.

I know Jehovah Witnesses have a problem with blood transfusions and I would therefore assume that they might have with organ donation. Any objections I have herard to organ donation so far from people I know seems to be on the basis of "sqeaminess" more thah anything else.

True they do, and will not donate or recieve any organ that has blood in it. I believe in organ donations, but those lose a person must know this the organ harverster(no other word i know to put) act like vultures and if you put down eye donor only they will take everything. I say this it happened to a coworker whose daughter died, they took two hole days to procees her, and she looked like crap( she weighed 60K's,130lbs, but looked like she weighed double that at the viewing).

Jason

I hope i didn't offend anyonr.

I don't have a problem with organ donation. I don't care what happens to my body after i die, and if it helps give someone else some life, then that would be great! :)

Is playing Devil's Advocate on a Christian Forum unbiblical?

What happens if that non-Christian person who received your life-saving organs was already a serial killer and only went on to commit more crimes?

Lets try this:

It doesn't matter since we are ignorant of future events. So irregardless of these future events, giving IMO, is the right thing to do. :yes

Can't donate my organs or even blood for 5yrs after my chemotherapy. 2more to go!! :)
