Should Christians stir up controversy with their beliefs? Is it Biblical?

I don't think many people hold views simply to stir up controversy. They (I would hope) hold them as they believe them to be the truth. Depending on what that belief is, controversy may be an unavoidable side-effect.

dont think we should stir up controversy.....people will listen to you, whether they take in what you are telling them is up to them.

i also have seen that if you are rude or constantly stir controversy, you make people unreceptive to what you are saying, however good it may be

This is a pretty insightful question. I believe that there are degrees to which it can be answered.

Christians are commanded to share the gospel, and the gospel is very controversial. Also, within the church, (notice that I am emphasizing within the church), we are called to stimulate one another to love and good works, and hold each other accountable to fulfilling our calling as Christians. This too, because of pride and sin, causes some controversy because not all want to walk according to the calling by which we were called.

These two issues, the gospel itself and how we hold each other accountable within the church are what might be considered legitimate areas of controversy.

Unfortunately, the church too often acts as though it is the morals police of the world, and that Jesus is a right-wing American Republican. Then, in full reactionary mode, another part of the church acts as though anything goes is actually godly and that Jesus is really a left-wing American Democrat. And both sides want to claim that they are the ones holding on to "GODS TRUTH" with a "don't-get-mad-at-me-its-God-who-says-this" attitude. The myriad of controversies that these attitudes give rise too are anything but legitimate and serve to divide the body of Christ and to weaken our ability to share the true gospel and to hold each other accountable.

.

Controversy is going to happen

no matter where you are in this life.

Jesus even had to contend with it.

2 Timothy 3:10-12

10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystraâ€â€what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

In the west we don't know what controversy is as far as being persecuted because of our belief in Jesus Christ, but we should.

I think Christians should approach the sharing of their views with the intent to generate understanding and community in the Lord. The minute a Christian brings something up just for the sake of arguement or controversy than they are doing it for the wrong reason and should not broach the topic.

My 2 cents.
