I haven't seen the Martin Scorsese movie that came out this year, but I did read the book written by Shusaku Endo. It was one of the best Christian books I've read in years, and very well written in general. For those who have read the book or seen the movies, the subject is God's silence during the persecution of Christians in 17th century Japan.

I just saw it. Longish movie that might bore someone without a cultural or spiritual interest. I'm glad I saw it (actually I own it now). By the end of the movie there are plot resolutions but no thematic ones, and the movie doesn't pretend to offer any. Just beautifully filmed questions.

Japan continues to be a big question mark for me personally.

Sometimes I wonder how God could allow an entire country to be non-Christian.
Being an island nation under constant threat of invasion from China might've had something to do with an isolationist mindset. After all America threatened them with war unless they agreed to trade.

Kevin, are you referring to Japan. I think that there is hope there (I know it is currently a small percentage though).
Yes, Japan. Of course, there are some Christians, but a very small percentage. But also, a dearth of Christian ideals in the culture and government. In contrast, America was founded in the eternal God and our political infrastructure is imbued with His truth (though I think we've lost our way lately in that regard, but at least the foundation is there).
