Anyone else notice that the pages are slow to load?
Yep., and not just today.
Recently there was a software "update" around here, and i thought....GREAT.
Didnt help the pages load any faster.
And yep, i have blazing Hi Fi speed and a Maxxed out Mac.
Taking a stab at this.
Site has been around for a long time, Database has to be pretty big despite efforts to keep it trimmed down.
The number we don't see is the thousands of hits this site gets constantly, from Web crawlers, to Bing bot checking and indexing new content. Not to mention the vast amount of folks skimming through here that never sign up.
If you been around awhile, you get tons of visitors and that eats up a whole lot of bandwidth. I wish they put the numbers of number of people connected at any time, I am sure a mod can see these numbers.
We pay about 14,000 a month in bandwidth at our church to service the World. Mind you we have free downloads, but the cost is crazy to have so many on and downloading at full speed.
So, it could possibly be, the site is chugging with the amount of users coming through. I said it could be, I can't see the numbers.
The thing that fixes that is throw money at the issue.
Maybe it's a virus.
That wasn't related to making the site faster. I had to update our theme to a new version.
Bingo. I have been doing some other things to try and speed up the site, and it has worked a bit. The site is very fast for me at the moment, even with quite a few members on.
But yeah, I'm going to do some database work, that's likely where the problem lies.
$14,000 a month for web hosting????????? That's a lot! How much traffic are you getting? Are you streaming huge amounts of media?
Not necessarily. If it's a database issue, which I believe it probably is, then no money is needed. The site has been around since 2003. But since we're on shared hosting and a relatively low-level plan, upgrading may happen eventually. It may not be needed at this time.
Thanks for the patience guys! I'm doing the best I can. It will take me at least a few days to get access to the database though. I'm also trying to see a pattern to our problems, which takes a while too.
Highly doubtful. Linux server.
All the teaching from our church is free, and we will send hard copy free if you call and ask. People all over the World are streaming or downloading into the millions of downloads per year. It's not cheap, and we have our own server rooms.
I did get a data base error yesterday and locked out for a bit. There are lots of factors that have to do with Data bases, included the speed of the machine the database is on. By faith, you will get it sorted, but site is responsive right now, Yesterday I had a period I could not even connect without a database error.
God's wisdom to see what you did not thinking of, and leading to all the right places that need fixed.
Yeah, I keep uncovering things that can be done to improve performance, so that's cool. I've noticed an improvement already.
Hey everyone, how has the site been in the past 24 hours? If it's ever really fast or really slow, can you post here what happened, and what time (snd your timezone, as I'm on GMT+11).
slow or not working. gmt-4, est us.
working very good for me... dont break it again Jason..
I post from my non windoze operating system on my Samsung phone.android os.it's still slow ar times.yesterday
Should be running a lot better. Software is upgraded and the database optimised.
Also, we may be moving to a VPS in the next couple of weeks. Woo!!!!
Nick do you have the time to SPLANE the what and why of a new server?
Greg (the owner) wants to get us over to his existing Virtual Private Server so we have more control and performance. Plus we haven't had many good experiences with our current host, HostGator.
so we would not have that stupid alligator ... good I dont understand the roles of host .... server.... service provider .... i do not understand what is was we moved from a couple years ago... they are all the same to me...
I sure get the speed at which this site is moving..
As the name implies, a server serves information to computers that connect to it. When users connect to a server, they can access programs, files, and other information from the server. Common servers are Web servers, mail servers, and LAN servers. A single computer can have several different server programs running on it.
Visit the Help Center for more information about servers.
This is a computer that acts as a server for other computers on a network. It can be a Web server, an e-mail server, an FTP server, etc. For example, a Web host is what provides the content of Web pages to the computers that access it. A host is also known as the mother computer. Well, not really, I just made that up.
As Mike Rowe would say, "it's running like a piece of poo."
