Can an illiterate man without any scripture know God?

Yes. God can be known "enough" to be held accountable for not believing in Him, per Romans 1:

because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20 (NASB)

But Paul later writes that salvation requires "hearing":

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent?... So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:14-15a, 17 (NASB)

Jesus didn't tell the apostles to make "converts." He told them to make "disciples." Discipleship carries with it the responsibility to study.

Study is not required for salvation, but it is required for discipleship. If you're going to stay in the faith, you have to walk in the faith and that, in part, requires study!

Salvation isn't cheap just because its free.
 
I agree with what you are saying and the Bible verses from within?

How many people have converted to Christianity by throwing in Bible verses? How many have been turned off because of you perfect knowledge of that stuff.

I'm not saying you do not need it at times? I'm saying how many people gave up on Christianity completely because comes and says...

"Oh... Romans 2: verse so and so is what you need."

Memory of the Bible can go so far.

There you are... in front of people who want to understand that Christianity can help them in there life.

They know you are Christian. Someone asks you a question on why I should trust the Bible. "What does it really meas... it's just a bunch words in a giant book anyway."

And, I never had to say a Bible verse... the question? Can you really use that one or two really say what you want?"

You go to through a whole bunch of verses and say... well, in ..... see? that is your answer?

Or, maybe telling them concepts.

The order (from most to least important) that I would assign would be
C) Revelation from the Holy Spirit and a teachable heart. I especially like the part about a teachable heart.

Then I'd go outside of the given responses to list "E: Prayerful fellowship with other Christians and Group Study" as the next important.

"A) A formal theological education," could mean an education given by any religious group and I don't know how to evaluate it as stated.

B) An understanding of classical languages (Greek, Hebrew, Latin whatever) would be helpful but in modern times is not as crucial as answer "C". [EDIT BY SPARROWHAWKE]: As I read this again it occurs to me that being a scribe, even a bi-lingual, or multi-linqual scribe or technical translator who can cite chapter and verse for every screwy doctrine imaginable isn't all that helpful. The language skills are excellent of themselves and clearly needed but apart from the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, given that we might know the things of God, well, if all we have is the "Spirit of world" and all we can see are the natural things of the world then these linguistic skills are of little personal value.

Regarding Answer "D": Given that "C" is the case, and we have the Guidance of the Holy Spirit combined with a teachable heart, comparing multiple versions seems prudent while studying and applying the Word of God to our lives, but it would be classified by me as being of less importance. I don't know of any "right" version. It would seem though that for those who considered this to be of vital importance, there should be a direct correlation between the value given to this answer and the value given to answer "B".

you sure have us educated ones hanging our heads in shame! Or are you talking of the Jer. 17:5 educated ones who have hardly any agreement on anything much seen, even today?

Seriously, you sure do come across as Isa. 14:12-14 in that paragraph! it sure sounds as I,I,I,I,I??

The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us, He guides us in all things. The Holy Spirit is Truth and knows all of scripture, for He revealed it to those who wrote it. We therefore don't need any theological education from other men only from the Holy Spirit. For those who have experienced the Holy Spirit Know that the New Testament is about each man knowing God for his self. They may study theology, they may not. It doesn't matter, God doesn't like haughtiness so let's quite attacking one another here.
