Ezekiel 16:49-50.

The sodomy and other sexual sins were only part of what did sodom and gomorrah in. Oppression of the poor and materialism played a big role, too.
One school of thought was that the sodomy was a form of punishment as a result of their Judgement upon someone for whatever reason (being poor, alien, being apostacised from their family and etc)

In this destruction account I do find it odd that where Lot offered his two daughters to the angry crowd (wasn't it a great day to be one of his valued daughters?) That when Lot was living in the cave later he inadvertently ended up doing the exact same thing. (Very ironic)
Bad company corrupting good morals the obvious conclusion. (And the third time that wine and 2nd time drunkenness are mentioned)

What I want to do is simply get others thoughts on why Sodom was destroyed and what God was thinking.
Gen 18:20 -21And the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,
“I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”

A few chapters earlier is the story of the flood by which God destroyed all of mankind save Noah and family because of the extreme level of sin.

Now, God sees the same thing starting over in Sodom and Gomorrah.

He's going to stop the cancer before it spreads.

My question also ...
then i read the Scripture CE posted

Eze 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Jude 1:7
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

i always thought it interesting when Jude points out they were going after "strange" flesh.

the word for strange is eteras which means of unknown origin.

Romans 1:18 KJV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

The wrath of God destroyed Sodom, and not another force. We see clearly who controls natural forces of nature at this point in time. Men knew enough about God from nature to be guilty.

Fear is a powerful deterrent to stop sin. How many times is this read, and suddenly God's thoughts about sin are seen?

One other interesting side note that the destruction of Sodom came after Abraham and his trained soldiers rescued Lot who was taken along with the whole city of Sodom.

IOW if Abraham hadn't rescued Lot and Sodom by defeating the other Kings, Sodom wouldn't have been around for destruction to begin with.

The way I see it is that Those cities were not destroyed just because of the sin of homosexuality, but because it was accepted and not spoken out against it by the residents of the cities. The uh, celebrated diversity...so they were destroyed.

I assume the scriptures are written in chronological order ... which is not always the case ...
Gen 13:9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Gen_15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

I heard just recently that the OT doesn't really end with Malachi, but with Chronicles, according to chronological order. I'm not positive that this is true, but that's what was said. I don't know how he came to this conclusion for I have not done the homework on this.

This is what I was speaking about in the OP. I was reading through Ezekiel and came across this passage. I know I had read it before, but this time around it was eerie to me. Most people think it was all about immorality of a certain kind not listed in the above verse.

Its almost like reading a synopsis of the land in which we live. When you take all there is said about Sodom, put together a picture 'time book', things sure do seem close to what we know about our land.

One of the many themes in Genesis is that "sin begets more sin". Even when one sin is destroyed even more were committed in destroying one sin.
Transgressions, ongoing sins you can't stop committing, are a way of life these days...as it has been for millennium. But that doesn't mean we are proud of our sins..

my impression was that the sodomy and other sexual sins grew out of a culture that worshipped self and 'stuff', oppressed the weak and the poor, etc. sodomy --is-- an abomination, but cultures don't turn sodomy-happy overnight. the despicable sexual activity may have just been 'the last straw,' or at least that's the impression I get.

Paul in Romans 1 said that the sexual sins were a result of the other sins.

What?
Read Romans 1 again.

Creation shows the nature of God.

Sodom theology reversed that and made God be in the image of man and animals. This gives man to be the judge of right wrong and anything else. The garden temptation was to be like God. The progression of sin is to exalt self above God.

So
Romans 1:24 KJV
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

A progression that the natural order is reversed. Looking at Lot (edit from Job - although not losing children is here too) shows a sacrifice of family to avert sin.
God sent his family member as a sacrifice to deal with sin (Jesus bore our sin in his body).

What is a spiritual homosexual?

Now I am from backwoods Mississippi, but it seems to me Godly difference makes for birth and continuance. When a group's theology gets to the point they exclude everyone of the opposite Godly natural order, they are doomed for extinction.

In Christ I am part of the female bride of Christ. If I exalt myself to be equal or above God then I exceed the natural order.

Jew and Gentile make one new man. Male female, weak, strong, bond, free.

Is it really ultimately about what we think?

I hope I stayed in the parable area enough that some got it. LOL
