What do you think about taking solos in music? Is it biblical? I'm talking here about both secular music and Christian music, but probably more Christian music.

I don't care for it much during a worship service because it's not about talent as much as it is praise and worship. I have noticed that even the most talented of Christian artists and bands limit their approach to solos.

It doesn't bother me much with the secular artists because with them, it is about musical talent sometimes. For instance, I'm still a big fan of a band called the Allman Brothers Band, who are known for their extended guitar and keyboard solos. I go to their concerts expecting to be moved, as a fan and guitarist, by their musical expertise.

I would agree with all of that. In the Christian music case, I believe it is a musicians job to accompany the singers' praises. When I drum at church I try to do it in a way that glorify's God as much as possible, but I'll admit sometimes I get carried away and end up doing it more for my glory than for God's. But I'm getting better.

I've never understood why you can't do solos and such in church, good music flows better then okay music. In my church when i took over the youth worship team i scraped all the other stuff and started the more powerful music. Now that is all both the Church and the youth play because everyone enjoyed the music better then the traditional stuff they used to play.

There is no reason why you can't praise God and play good at the same time.

I'll upload some of our stuff if i can find it.

Our church (especially the youth group) got heaps of new, lively songs over the past few years, and it's been great.

I think if it adds life to the music, then maybe. But I think it's dangerous, as you might be doing it for the wrong reasons. Just be careful, I suppose.

Well I say why not, as long as you do it unto the Lord, like this R&B gospel group Excelsior, who is not afraid to use, guitar solos, with distortion.
