Okay, so what are some good Christian heavy metal bands?

A few people on here have been discussing this musical genre, and it has been pointed out that the lyrics are sometimes a bold testimony.

Disciple
Red (heavy-metal influenced)
Skillet (more like hard rock?)
Fireflight (Christian rock, hard rock, alternative metal)

I've also heard of (but have yet to listen to) the following:
Demon Hunter
Flyleaf

Hey, thanks, questdriven.

I wonder, have you talked at all with Paul1965, who is also into Christian heavy metal?

Blessings, and thinking and praying for you tomorrow.

Servant, from the 70's and 80's.

Also Third Day, the one with lead singer Lazarus Varla from Ontario that doesn't exist anymore, but had a good album or two. (But then I'm prejudiced since I was a roadie/sound tech for them on a tour one time. :) )

Wow, were you?

Added another to the list as well. :)

Not particularly.

Yeah, those were good times. Powerful music with all the special effects of the time, flashpots, lightning bolts, all kinds of stuff. And a good message in the lyrics as well as good preaching always with a challenge to accept Christ (with results!) And unlike many of today's Christian bands, no charge to do the concert beyond donations, and no ticket sales or admission charge. All donations only. And God provided the donations!

They always had me introduce the band because they said I had a good announcer's voice. I guess it was good training because today I have a job as a sound tech in a church and one day during worship team rehearsal, just playing around, I threw on some reverb and introduced the first song as if I was introducing a rock band in a stadium and they loved it! I thought it was way overboard, but now they have me start the service that way every Sunday. Go figure!

Yep, a lot of good times back then. I miss them.

Hey, Ty questdriven. So who's the lead singer in Fireflight?

Blessings.
Dawn Michele (had to look it up, heh ^^; )

The guy who used to be a drummer for them spoke at the Bible study I attend once. :) He didn't announce himself as being a former member of Fireflight, though, as he didn't want that to be the focus.

Great. Sounds like he lives what he preaches, so to speak.

It's been said that some Christian heavy metallers are bold in their lyrics and witness. This is why I find the genre interesting.

Blessings.

Not only bold in witness, but I find a lot of their songs are bold in pointing out problems within the church as well. Since most people who listen to Christian music are churchgoers, that's an important aspect of it too.

All around are enemies
to whom we shift the blame
for the problems on the streets,
and the youth we can not tame.

In our own families
there’s hatin’ goin’ on.
When will we realize
these problems are our own?

Give a cup of water
in the name of the Lord.
We need to give away
all the things that we have stored.

Too much time
spent thinkin’ of ourselves,
when all around us
people cryin’ out for help.

Reminds me a bit of the song Looking for Angels, by Skillet.

Going through this life, looking for angels
People passing by, looking for angels

Walk this world alone
Try to stay on my feet
Sometimes crawl, fall but I stand up
'Cause I'm afraid to sleep

Open my eyes to a new day
With all new problems and all new pain
All the faces are filled with so much anger
Losing our dignity and hope from fear of danger

After all the wars, after settling the scores
At the break of dawn we will be deaf to the answers
There's so much bigotry, misunderstanding and fear
With eyes squinted and fists clinched we reach out for what is dear

We want it, we want, we want a reason to live
We're on a pilgrimage, a crusade for hope
'Cause in our hearts and minds and souls we know
We need it, we need, we need more than this

Going through this life, looking for angels
People passing by, looking for angels
Walking down the streets, looking for angels
Everyone I meet, looking for angels

So many nations with so many hungry people
So many homeless scrounging around for dirty needles
On the rise, teen suicide, when we will realize
We've been desensitized by the lies of the world

We're oppressed and impressed by the greedy
Whose hands squeeze the life out of the needy
When will we learn that wars, threats and regrets
Are the cause and effect of living in fear

Who can help protect the innocence of our children
Stolen on the Internet with images they can't forget

We want it we want, we want a reason to live
We represent a generation that wants to turn back a nation
To let love be our light and salvation
We need it, we need, we need more than this

Going through this life, looking for angels
People passing by, looking for angels
Walking down the streets, looking for angels
Everyone I meet, looking for angels

I became a savior to some kids, I'll never meet
Sent a check in the mail to buy them something to eat
What will you do to make a difference, to make a change?
What will you do to help someone along the way?

Just a touch, a smile as you turn the other cheek
Pray for your enemies, humble yourself, love's staring back at me
In the midst of the most painful faces
Angels show up in the strangest of places

PS: was he the guy from Fireflight that has all the tattoos, BTW? Maybe you wouldn't remember, though.

Blessings.

Servant - Cup of Water - Shallow Water album. Would have been from late 70's or early 80's. This particular song isn't real heavy metal but Servant had others that really raised some hackels in some churches back then! :-D I just thought of it when you mentioned lyrics. A couple months ago our pastor preached on charity and giving to the poor so right after the service I threw this one on the sound system just loud enough to be heard as people were milling around. I don't think anyone had ever heard it before, but some asked me where I ever found such a fitting song for that particular day!

Pretty sure he wasn't the one with tattoos.

questdriven:

Oh okay. Don't think Dawn has any either. (I did wonder, though, whether she has a tongue ring in the For Those Who Wait clip - at 3.14 of the video; just happened to notice.)

Sounds like the band has lasted a good few years already.

Blessings.

I am not a big fan of Skillet but just last night my daughter came over for dinner and we have always shared with each other different songs that we have enjoyed. The first band that she pulled up on YouTube was Skillet. She had gone to a concert of theirs a few years back and her favorite song was The Last Night (also Better Than Drugs). I listened to the lyrics and was moved by the powerful words. I believe that this helps a younger generation ( as in my daughter's case) to come to see the Light and hear of our Lord in a way that reaches them at a level that some of the music I listen to does not.

One part of The Last Night that I felt powerful was:

The night is so long when everything's wrong
If you give me your hand, I will help you hold on
Tonight, tonight

This is the last night you'll spend alone
Look me in the eyes so I know you know
I'm everywhere you want me to be

The last night you'll spend alone
I'll wrap you in my arms and I won't let go
I'm everything you need me to be

I won't let you say goodbye
And I'll be your reason why
The last night away from me, away from me
