Maybe it was malicious neighbors or a mistake we will never know. But at about 9 in the morning there was a noise outside my house. My husband and I didn't think anything of it because work on the power poles, street lights and electrical on my street has been an ongoing process. My husband stepped out to find that a tree removal crew have nearly finished taking down our spruce. It was 150 years old and in need a grooming. It isn't great loss because we would have eventually had to remove it because of its age. But my prayer is that we don't get charged a large fee because of someone else's mistake. The crew was very sorry this happened without our permission.

Without your authorization you cannot be charged. Perhaps those working on the power poles determined it was a potential hazard to the poles and had it cut down, but they still should have asked your permission.

I don't know who asked to have it cut down. They are putting in underground fiber optics and electrical. They are getting rid of the power poles.

If it's on the right of way ,you don't own the area. It's crappy as you maintain it . Check your survey ,it will tell you.

Did you find out for sure if it was the utility company?

I had an unusual experience recently. I had a spruce tree removed from behind my house.(Man was it loud when the trunk hit the ground, it shook the ground and the whole house) So I had the crew prune a big old oak tree on the side of the house while they were here, paid more for that than to chop down the spruce.

It's not even my oak, survey says it's the neighbor's. Investor bought the house, tore it down, got a survey, and put the vacant lot up for sale. Ran into a mess, bigger than he wanted to deal with. (Reticulite)

Anyway, no spruce trees will be falling on our houses!

I found out it was the owner of a car dealership. He's going to have to foot the bill, it looks like, because he requested it without our consent.

See if that car dealership has a new spruce railing or fence? Lol. Spruce is the strongest wood, pound for pound. It makes great oars because it's so springy; racing oars. I've gotten a rowboat to plane like it was a speedboat!

No info still? It just seems weird. Considering the age of the tree do you know if they took it or disposed of it? Even though it's classed as a softwood, certain types of the one you mention are highly prized for construction of instrument parts. Age for trees is like it is for wine. I'm almost thinking you got robbed in a fashion.

Could be just the musings of a sawmill veteran but who knows.
