This can't wait. Will be so busy tomorrow.
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
So, the thread can't wait. Anyone has an idea what exactly this verse is talking about, especially the heighlight? Some have argued differently on the meaning and some think it's impossible not to admire...

Don't stare at women. All sorts of things might happen.

He's talking about not lusting after other people's wives. This is not, as many believe, about two single people falling in love. That this is the case can be seen from the word "adultery". Adultery is defined as sex between two people, at least one of whom is married, but they are not married to each other.

Lust after means to want. A lust can be good or bad depending on what your lusting after. Lusting in the bible does not have the exact same English meaning as in the bible it just means a flesh want.

Also compare James about how sin is conceived. Jesus said you did not sin, He said that the adultery is in your heart, which can bring forth sin. In other words the seed is planted.

To be safe though, I suggest a big piece of duct tape across the eyes. Check into the cost of seeing eye dogs and start to learn braille. Best course of Action for a case like yours.

This is part of the sermon on the mount recorded in chapters 5, 6, & 7 of Mathew.

I don't think it's wise to pick out just one verse without considering the whole of the discourse, but what Jesus is pointing out in this verse, as well as others, is the full measure of sin against the law. So, this is far more than just Jesus talking about lusting after a woman, but rather the totality of sin; how utterly sinful man is. It's not enough to simply not commit adultery and call yourself righteous because the sin is not just in the act, but in the heart.

The way I see it is in how it is used in the context of Matthew 5. Jesus is talking about and demonstrating the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. In the case of verse 28 he says, "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

We have a habit of doing everything in our power to justify our misbehavior. For example, if I am campaigning for political office I might make a statement such as, "I will never support a tax increase if I am elected." Once I am in office, if I support a new tax would I go against my campaign promise? In the strictest sense of my words the answer is an absolute, "No!" I did not support a tax increase. What I did support was the creation of new taxes. In spirit of my commitment however, I reneged on my promise.

We think that, by the letter of the law or definition of adultery, if we never actually sleep with another person outside of wedlock, we don't commit adultery and therefore we are 'good', but Jesus is pointing out how weak and unjust we are because even the mere thought of lust with another is in violation of the spirit of the law.

I see the 10 commandments in much the same way. We weren't given them as a blueprint. We were given them to show us how weak and evil we truly are and why we need a savior.

Edit: I guess I'm repeating what Danus is saying in a different way. Sorry, I didn't read all the replies before posting.

Another thread about women huh? lol
My 2.5 cents says there's a difference between admiring and lusting. Lusting is more like when the man (or woman looking at a guy) is checking out every curve and envisioning, or wondering what it would be like to bed the person.

I see that thinking about adultery (lusting) and the actual physical adultery as both being the same. However the earthly consequence for the actual physical adultery is probably much worse.
