I was wondering if everyone is working this summer and what kind of job do you have? They are hard to come by in my area.

So, I purchased a power washer and people have been hiring me to wash their decks, fences, whatever else. It's pretty good money and I had the washer paid off in the first week!

So what is everyone doing for jobs this summer?

*disclaimer: yes, I am going to talk a little economics in the teens forum. Just a little! (shock horror! :lol)*

People say the Australian economy is at this point in time one of the best in the world - well since the GFC we have had 1 quarter of negative growth, and interest rates are at the moment 4.75%. The economy is chugging along quite nicely, and remember we have the mining boom.

But...we just saw Australia produce it's first contraction of GDP since 1991. Sure, not many are losing jobs like they are in the US and in Europe, but it's still very hard to find jobs.

So, this actually does lead somewhere!
My situation: I finished school last year. Earlier this year I went with my familly over to Europe for a couple of months on a holiday, and now that I'm back, nothing is going down, so I need to find a job to fill in the time and make some money before going to university next year.

Well about a month ago I finally got a job after a six months of searching (with our trip in the middle of that searching). I searched for many different jobs - retail, office, sales, telemarketing, and finally got a job at the Australian division of Burger King.

Many of my friends are finding the same - there's just not the work out there that there used to be.

Ok, that's my rant over! :lol

Did you just graduate high school? What will you go into at univeristy?

Congratulations! Burger King is better than McDonald's, so there is a plus. I wouldn't be surprised that in 10 or so years, you'll be owning franchises of Burger King. :)

I forgot to mention I do have a very part time job at Pizza Hut - do you have those in Australia? I told them I could only work weekend nights because there I make $10.00 an hour and power washing pays $15.

The jobs here are being taken by adults, the teens are the last to be hired, for Blockbuster, a video store, there were over 2,000 applicants so I didn't even bother. It's very difficult, too, because I'm not 18 yet, a couple of my friends who have turned 18 have gotten jobs, but could not at 17.

They say the job market is picking up, but I'm not sure, I haven't researched to find out.

I've heard of alot of people who have graduated college and can not find jobs, either that or they take jobs in different fields and make less money than if they were in their degree field.

It's not been good!

Our school year follows the calenar year, as our summer is your winter. So I graduated last November/December.

I am hoping to study High school teaching. I have the marks, and am half enrolled in the course already. So nearly all is set for next year.

LOL I'm not that much of a fan of BK or Maccas (prefer KFC or Oporto) but oh well, it's work and i'm glad I'm doing something, as opposed to sitting around the house. And i hope in 10 years to have been teaching history and geography for six years, but thanks for the vote of confidence! :biggrin

Yeah, there's a Pizza Hut very near my house. A few of my friends work/have worked there. The one here is a good place to work.

My brother who is almot 16 got rejected from a few jobs because older, more mature university students applied. I see the reasoning, but the end of the day younger people need to get employed so they can have experience and get more skills. Most of the retail jobs require experience. Well where can I get it? :shrug

If have also noticed this trend in older people "stealing" youngers' jobs. Perhaps it is becasue the economy is in a downturn and businesses aren't willing or able to spend as much money on training. In general, I would assume that younger people require more training than older people. Having said that, older people who already have expreince may be more expensive in the long run to employ. :shrug

Australia is going well, but I think we have a few more volaile years left before it definately starts picking up for an economic boom. I think the US and UK are in forr some trouble yet. I don't think we have finished this recession yet.

I've heard of alot of people who have graduated college and can not find jobs, either that or they take jobs in different fields and make less money than if they were in their degree field.

I've heard this too. It does depend on which profession you are talking about. Teachers, for instance, are in great demand. Pitty the pay doesn't equal the skill level. Oh well.
But in Australia, it is estimated that in the next five years, one third of the current teachers will retire.

You'd make a good teacher, Nick! Good luck with your studies.

I think the employers might think older people are more responsible, but I do agree with you, too, the younger people can't get any experience if no one is willing to give them a chance.

I agree with you, the recession is not over for sure. They say the housing market is coming back somewhat but what they don't say is the housing prices have decreased by 25% from 6 years ago, so everyone selling right now, unless they purchased their homes 20 years ago, will lose alot of money.

Sometimes, I wonder if the US will ever fully recover. :chin

thanks :)

I'm not sure if the US will ever fully recover. Not to what it once was. That is left for the BRICS nations.

I'm a student :lol

That's what I put down whenever I see the option box "occupation". It sounds so much better than "unemployed". Since I don't work I take classes. I have class every MTWTF. Weekends I do house work (mowing more or less).

Economy is TERRIBLE. I have applied to maybe 50 places and never get a lick of work. Fingers crossed I'll get a job with the local EMS in town this fall. If not I'll go back to my old employer on my hands and knees and beg for a job and I'm sure she'll give me one because that's the kind of awesome lady she is... plus she likes me.

My other set of fingers are crossed that the local PD will call me back and tell me they want to hire me for that paid internship spot...

:lol I do that, too, put student for occupation, but it's true!

There aren't many jobs at all, I have alot of people my age, doing nothing this summer - no jobs, but they could be somewhat industriast, too, as people always need something done, mowing lawns, painting something and the wealthier areas hire people to do everything for them.

What was your old job?

I'm too lazy to find a real job, so I'm "working" at my mom's office. I don't actually get to keep any of the money I "earn", I'm only drawing a salary so we get taxed less. I should probably get a real job to put a dent into the ridiculous amount of debt I will be when I (hopefully) graduate in 6 years.

I used to work at a grocery store. I put food in bags and carried them to cars and flirted with cashiers :lol

It was a co-worker issue. I didn't want to get arrested for aggravated assault so I told my boss I needed to take a break.

(Aggravated assault because there is no way that dude could have defended himself against me :biggrin )

good thing you left then!

I live "Out in the woods" in a tiny neighborhood, so I've never had a job at a store or anything, but occasionally I get hired by a neighbor to do yardwork, dogsit, water plants, mow the lawn, ect. This year I had my first job where I was paid by the hour. It was yard work that ranged from hauling stone slabs, to raking leaves. That lasted almost all summer, and I got about 400$ from it in all :biggrin
