Straight Razors are something of an old school commodity that is half art and half talent these days.
Safety Razors have pretty much taken over.
But a great Vintage razor (cutthroat razors) will give a better shave than any safety razor. Less irritation for those with sensitive skin. Unless using a Pakistan steel made razor. The best are either German steel or American steel. (Friends don't let friends shave with Pakistani razors)

Today they are pieces of functional art and their craftsmanship reflects that. There are some that are basic and merely functional...But even those are dressed up a bit.

Google a few and see the prices. $200-$6,000 and up for a razor. The good strops (used for sharpening) start at $100 and go up.

On top of this it takes time, concentration, and talent to use one. And of course it's easier to shave someone else than it is to shave yourself. Most of them come with a styptic pencil or alum block for the nicks. (Or highly recommended that you obtain one)

But actually I am faster with a straight razor than a safety razor. I only shave once a week. So the safety razor gets clogged up quickly. The straight razor...Well I make it a game to see how high I can stack the hair and foam.

Yes it's scary, yes it's dangerous, yes it's the best shave at the end of the day.

People were more responsible for their safety back in the ole' days.

Now we see "watch your step" signs all over!
Otherwise we might trip and fall...

But here is a custom piece...sold for $1,800 usd...

These are usually made by guys with a forge, anvil, and tempering oven. Also a hammer helps.

But the making of these is extremely time consuming and expensive. Especially when expensive materials are used for the scales.
 
Ordered a couple of Vintage razors and they arrived today. My strop showed up Friday.
Both razors are around 100 years old and....Sharp as a razor.

One is a smiling razor and one sings.

I'd post pictures but...
 
Im a animal, when i shave I go straight razor on face, no shaving cream or nothing. I haven't tried a rock face shave, I might try it one day just to see how they shaved in the stone age and see if i can handle.
