I think Otis Redding wrote the original lyrics about a man wanting respect.

Aretha rewrote the lyrics to a woman wanting respect.

In Otis's original version, yes.

In Aretha's version, the woman is a breadwinner who does her husband no wrong. She demands to be treated with respect.
