I think your location comes into it. We have a farm and the house is a quarter mile off a very small rural road.
We have always had at least one large dog living outside. Our current great dog is part German Shepherd, Lab and Siberian Husky. No one in a car or on foot could get close without her barking like nuts.
We have various rifles and one shotgun. I wouldn't expect to ever be confronted by an intruder inside.
But I am not an expert.

I put in a picture of my dog on the lookout up our driveway

I like the idea of a shotgun for primary home defense. Close range "stopping" power, but rapidly loses lethality over longer distances (say 50 yards or so). Nice setup for urban protection whilst mimimizing collateral damage risk.

That's a good looking dog Brother. He looks like he is on duty, lol!

That's a good thought there. Can't have any collateral damage. That would be a total failure. You might not think so at first, but it's fairly well established that that little ol 55 grain bullet in a .223 is actually fairly safe from over penetration and such because of the light weight of the projectile. (But 00 buck pellets are also 53-55 grains themselves.

Cant carry those ,plus recoil .my wife cant handle those .

Well, the ol' Box-o-truth gives some surprising results that defy conventional wisdom. The .223 sailed right through 12 pine boards and was still going, even though it did tumble as designed. 00 buck only made it through 8 boards of sheetrock (a lighter material), with most of the pellets stopped at 7.

I think it has to do with simple velocity. The rifle round is travelling at nearly 3x the speed of buckshot. That's a big difference in energy.

20 ga. Remington 870 youth. I bought my son one of those when he was young...that is such a sweet little SG. It had a 20" barrel and was no longer than a 10/22. Very cool.

An old used Colt King Cobra .357 Magnum was the first firearm I ever bought. Satin Stainless. I had it for years, then eventually sold it. I just saw the other day Colt is bringing them back! MSRP $899, but i'm sure considerably less than that through gun dealers.

Wow I remember those prices. There was a "run" on ammo thus driving the prices way up when Obama was in office. Obama was the best gun salesman ever lol. hey have come down considerably since then. But with democrats recently attempting to go after guns again it may drive prices up again.
