We absolutely need to hear that still small voice of HIs and everyday that is called "Today". We need it for instruction. We need it for wisdom. We needed to know the right thing to do. Even if the matter is a simply what way to go to work, and we do there five days a week, we still needed to be listening to Him because who knows what can happen the next time you drive to work.

So we need Him. Of course He is not the only little voice people pick up. It is like those cartoons that have a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other, with the guy in the middle. The devil is tempting the guy, 'Oh go do this little thing, you'll like it'. And the little angel is saying 'Oh, no don't do that. You know that is not the right thing to do'. And the guy in the middle has a decision to make and the freewill to make it.

Now that is not actually our conscience as many suppose. It is actually the battle with dark forces, that we have in our life We do have a conscience, but to understand that we need to understand that our conscience it "OUR" conscience. The guy in the middle of the two spirits knows the right thing to do, just like the little angel explained. That is where his conscience comes in. He knows he is being tempted because he had a conscience, and he knows the angel of the Lord is right, because he has a conscience.

Our conscience comes from things we learned and is part of us. In our own spirit, we have learn things and our spirit has ideas of what is right and wrong, because it has been taught. Because our conscience is "out" conscience and make conclusions based on our thinking it sometimes can be wrong.

For example, if you go to a country where people drive on the other side of the road there is going to be something in you thinking this driving on the other side of the road is wrong. That something is not the little devil, nor the Spirit of God, but it is 'your' conscience. Your mind has to override your own conscience.

One of the problems with our conscience is that is will have us thinking "inside the box". Now that is not true with the Holy Spirit. God has His own thinking and His thoughts are not our thoughts. Knowing how this all works is important, because it can help us get to know and recognize the still small voice of the Lord.

For example: A college student is given homework. There conscience would tell themselves that they need to make some time to do it. Then that tempter might come and start saying they really want to go to that party tonight. Then they might hear a voice telling them, "That home work is going to take more time than you think."

So in the example, their conscience is going to want them to make some time based upon their thinking. The devil is going to tempt them go to the party and not worry about the homework, and God is telling them that their own thinking has not made a correct conclusion about the time it is going to take to finish the homework.

Now if the person believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, as their Lord, they are going to recognize that voice reproving them as to the amount of time it is going to take to do the homework, and they will override their conscience and start doing it earlier.

And let me give another example: In the Bible we have Pilate talking to Jesus. Jesus is the One who has the words of God, The words of God belong to Him, and the Spirit (that little angel of the Lord - still small voice) does not speak in His own initiative but as He hears He speaks. But in this case Jesus is in the flesh and we see this devil, angel and guy in the middle all played out in the flesh.

That group that had the devil for their father (Jn 8:44) had brought Jesus to Pilate and were talking in his ear. And Jesus was also having a conversation with Pilate and explaining that His kingdom is not of this world and that everyone who is of the truth hears His voice (Jn 18:36,37) And of course Pilate is the guy in the middle, leaning on His own understanding. By his conscience he tries to do what he thinks is right. He tries to use a custom to get the people to release Jesus because he can't find any fault in Him. That effort was an effort to do what was right based upon his conscience

Jn 19:12 As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him.

What we should learn is that leaning on our understanding, which also includes the use of our conscience is not going to get it done. Pilates sins was not as great as those whose father was the devil, but it was still a sin.

Jn 19:11... he who has delivered Me to you has the greater sin.

So to get away from that you need realize that it is not your understanding, or doing the homework as you think it should be done, but rather your hearing by faith that is needed! We have to seek that still small voice of the Lord. If we learn that little fact then our conscience will start telling our mind that we had better seek the advice of the Lord.

Some have seared their conscience. When one is arguing with their conscience, it is a good time to go to the Lord in prayer.

Yes -- We also read 1Tim 1:19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.

Since we are made in His image we have a body, soul, and spirit. They are all us though, and not God, nor the devil for that matter. So what happens is that deep in us (I believe in our soul) we all have an understanding that God exists. We have learned that in our spirit, but it is rejected by our mind (body). And again you have it right. We can have a conflict in ourselves. That is not hearing God, but it is where the question of whether we are going to listen to God is decided.

And how often does that question come up?

Today, am I going to reject Jesus Christ, who is the Word of God who speaks to us via the Holy Spirit? Of am I going to reject Him today, and just go my own way?

Heb 3:7 and Heb 3:15 and Heb 4:7 and Ps 95:7 "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOU HEARTS, AND WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME"

So there is a decision to reject Jesus Christ "TODAY". And that decision is about hearing His voice, and goes on in our hearts, spiritually speaking. We battle with powers and dark forces, so sin is going to talk to us. And Jesus stands at the door knocking and if anyone will open up to Him is will come into them and eat with them. And we (body, soul, and spirit) have a choice to make about who will follow?

We should listen Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings. Wisdom is in Him, but that also means reproof is in Him. And we don't want that, no matter how good it is for us.

Some will jump into following those powers and principalities. We normally think that is spiritualist like a Satanist, or perhaps Psychic, but lets us also remember that Jesus told the Pharisees that their father was the devil. Evil spirits of principalities love the chief spiritual seats, of say an elder, teacher, preacher, or priest. They want the control, and if they can use a person to get it, great. It's the wolves in sheep clothing.

That does not mean that some are not called by God to positions of authority, but if called they are listening to and getting their instruction for "Today" from the Lord Jesus Christ. However, if that is the case they should certainly understanding about hearing Jesus Christ via the Holy Spirit!! They should certainly understand that Jesus Christ is called the Word of God then! This is not a wrangling over words, so they can consider both Jesus Christ and the Scriptures the Word of God. The Scriptures because God spoke to people in the past who wrote as instructed, and it was preserved for our benefit. And also Jesus Christ because all things the Father has belong to Him, which includes the personal words that God has for each of us. And the Spirit of God takes from what belongs to Jesus Christ and gives them to us.

But some have always rejected Him. They think they are correct in by trying to follow their own understanding, even their own understanding of the Scriptures. That is they reject the voice of the Lord and suddenly it is about "works"! They might even give into those powers and principalities without even knowing it, and start seeking after the chief seats in church without an actually instruction or calling from the Lord. They have come to reject the idea of there even being a spiritual realm and fail to recognize where authority and power comes from. And it is as you noted Edward, "Some have seared their conscience".

They didn't keep faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected and suffered shipwreck, in regard to their faith. Just like we see written and quoted above in 1 Tim 1:19
