The way God loves us, and the love God gives us is illistrated in the bible by a few different models for love.

The love of a Shepard towards His sheep. God has referenced His people to be like sheep more then once, and Jesus to be the good Shepard who loves and care for the flock. Not just a hired hand, but one who will look for a lost sheep, and defend against a wild animal for the sheep. In this way God's love can be looked at from a master and an animal. One who knows better then the animal taking care of it, and loving it. Not everyone grows up on a farm or has pets in their home that they love and care for. But in a way I find this kind of relationship to be an example of God's love for us.

•The love of a father to His children. Many times through prophets God refers to Israel as a rebellious child. And later Jesus goes further to call God personally "Father," and tells us to do the same. Saying "Father who art in Heaven," and telling parents that if they know how to give good gifts to their children how much more God will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Both in Old and New Testiments God is shown to have a father kind of relationship with us. Even in discipline. So a second way to know of God's love is by our examples of parents loving their children. Or by our own experience being a son or daughter, or our experience being a father or mother.

The love of a husband to His wife. The third example of love is possibly the most personable. Unlike an animal or a child to look after, a wife is a special relationship of partnership. It is with this revelance that God speaks of Israel as a adulterous wife with idolatry, and a prostute with seeking others instead of seeking God. Harsh words for any marriage, and bibically the only consistent rule for divorce. But there is also the prophesy of the Bride of Christ. The new city of Jerusalem coming down from heaven. That God would love us with this same kind of relationship, and let it be a model for us to understand His love shows a great amount of love when we get married, or as we grow old with our wife or husband.

Each of these should be an example to learn from about God's love for us, but also Jesus's harsh words for anyone who harms another, makes people stumble, and His laws that invoke the death penalty and the fear of hell. If we do wrong to one another we do wrong to the ones God loves. He loves the world so much He sent His son Jesus to save us and redeem us. But as a whole the world is full of evil to harm the people God created, is protective of, and loves. So the rule to love our neighbor, love our enemy, and to love as Jesus loves us are heavy concepts.

In my opinion they are easier when considering the models of Love in our lives that God has placed as models regarding His love for us. A Shaperd, a Father, and a Husband. Things we can more easily learn from in our own lives and apply to our neighbors, as well as our loved ones.

:goodpost There's an old saying that love conquers all. When we know that pure love God has for us then we can also show that love to others as this is the love/light of Christ that shines through us drawing the darkness in others to His marvelous love/light.
