I am going to say this one more time, from a former christian: The genesis account was meant to be a mataphor to explain why things like evil, and dieases and bad stuff exist.
Hebrew is unique in that it has tenses that indicate literal, figurative, allegorical or metaphorical meanings in the context of the specific passages. Care to guess which tense the Genesis 1 and 2 accounts are written in? Hint: It negates your concept of the story being a metaphor. Have a great day, and God bless.

They thought it was literal, but God could meant it to be metaphor, humans make mistakes.

I know it was written in Hebrew. Thanks for pointing out the obvious, you haven't said anything I haven't dealed with, even when I was a Christian.

That is your view, and you have a right to your view. What you don't have a right to do is minimize God's word in the presence of people who hold God's word with esteem. It is rude and abrasive.

How would you like me to tell you that unless you bow to our mighty doctrines and our Holy Book that you shalt burn in hell for all of eternity. Doesn't rub you the right way does it? Try having a little respect would ya and stop asserting yourself as authoritive on something you know little to nothing about.

Thanks Steve for your comments:wave

Hey guys. I'm back.

Things have gotten a little heated in here. I apologise if any of the discussion in this thread has offended anyone Christian on this site. I didn't actually start this thread but it is because of me that it was created.

Oh, btw, the page reference was 217..

Thisnumberisdisconnected- interesting point about the tense in Hebrew. I would still be skeptical but that's a great piece of support.

Yeah, I don't see this topic progressing much further without much larger issues of faith being addressed and I don't want to outright attack/offend anyone.

Essentially, what we are argueing has nothing to do with the validity of their faith.

It doesn't deal with God at all, only marriage.

I don't see why it became so personal, as it wasn't meant to be.

A great piece of support of what? At best it is just means that the hebrews didn't SEE it as a meaphor, it doesn't at all prove it actually was the case.

I think it's really my fault as I did touch upon some points that did address the veracity of Biblical historical accounts. I think you did a much bettet job of sticking to the topic than I did

Well, I did say I was skeptical
:lol

I was just commending him on finding that aspect of the language to support his argument.

Its fine.

As to the topic, we presented our case, I think rather conclusively.

It is really up to them to think and determine weather or not it satisfies them.

Why do so many think marriage came from the Bible?

Here's the topic of this thread. Let's stay on it and avoid the personal attacks. If we can't keep it civil, the thread will have to be closed.

Ato, I never play the age card. Typically, I'd say it's not relevant. But this statement is outrageous. You're 14 years old. When were you a Christian? When you were 12? At 12 years of age, you were able to assess the validity of Christianity to the point that you can be here today, at 14, and make such an arrogant statement. When you mature enough to the point where you can admit you don't have all the answers, you will then have more answers than you do. I'm sorry, but the case that you investigated all he arguments for and against Christianity and are now in position to speak from experience is utterly completely void of legitimacy.

Again, I'd never had said a thing about your age if you hadn't inferred that you have "life experience" to claim you know what you say you know.

I am not fourteen. I am sixteen.( I got held back because I couldn't speak english.)

I am the first to admit something I don't know, and I am usually fine with admitting when I did something wrong, and when I made a mistake.

I never claimed to know everything. I was talking about the points he made. They have been made thousands of times to me. Let ask you, Have you investigated ALL the arguments for and against?

If you have, please, by all means tell me an argument that you think I haven't heard of. Do it in PMs though.

I the two years I have done so much searching its not even crazy.

who are you to tell me that just because I am young that I haven't done any, or a lot of searching? Age does not pertain to searching for God.

Just because I am young, doesn't mean I can't know a lot about a subject.

Way to call me arrogant. Once again, I never claimed to KNOW EVERYTHING. I said he hasn't said anything I haven't dealt with. So, unless he stated EVERYTHING your claim is not right.

Ato, I never said you don't know anything, and yes, you have come here with arrogance in your posts. You implied, by the post that I quoted, that you have had the experience as a Christian to speak with authority from a former-Christian perspective. People go their entire lives learning, and for those things I don't know, I have scripture to fill in the gaps. Apparently, you've filled them all in yourself.

As I said, I don't make age an issue. I've never called anyone out here on the board for their age. But when you implied that even in your former life as a Christian... I'm telling you, you didn't learn everything you needed to know to claim that experience. At 16, you're an atheist, and you can speak from the perspective of an atheist, but to imply that you have a full POV of a Christian is to be dishonest with yourself and us.

If you read my post carefully enough, you would have known that I said, What he is saying is nothing I haven't heard before, even when I was a christian.

All of his arguments, that he presented, I have heard before. And dealt with before.

I never claimed that I HAVE DEALT with all of the arguments for christianity.

You seem to think that I claimed that I know everything about christianity because I was a christian, thats not what I was claiming at all.

I am saying that what he was saying was not something new to me.

I believed in Jesus Christ, and now I don't. Doesn't that make me a former christian?

And if it doesn't, then what does?

I do have authority to speak as a former christian because I AM ONE.

I never claimed to have the full POV of a christian.

I have claimed that I am a former Christian, though.

Seriously, why put things into my posts that I don't even mean?

Not to offend, but have you forgotten the Scripture is inspired by God -- "God breathed'? Which means they wrote down exactly as He intended.

I haven't forgotten thats what people think, but I was not that kind of christian, more of the "Inspired" type pf christian. Now I obviously don't believe God inspired it at all.

You don't offend, and I can see why you would defend it, because you believe it.

Just so you know, before I get critized again, I won't ever think any less of you just because we disagree.

I do at least have an understanding of your belief, whether or not it is enough to claim that I was a former believer apearently has been contented.

Alright. 159 posts, many off topic and personal. I think this thread is done for now.

It's a cool topic, and I might re-open it in a few days after a cool-down period.
