Sponge on a stick
interesting but he's got hold of the wrong end of the stick.
see Mark15:36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
and
John19:29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

Note, a staff, & a stalk of Hyssop not an item from the roman latrine.

Jesus had been busy since long before sunrise...all night in fact. Now it's after lunchtime.
All that time getting beaten, then horsewhipped, then paraded around the nobles as a joke, then carrying his crosspiece...he looked and was exhausted. It wasn't like he got a break in all this to stop for a slushy at the circle K. It's also on the medditeranian. Meaning it was hot and in the sun.

The vinegar was actually a blend of old wine and water drank by people as a form of tart koolaide. It was good as a thirst quencher as it cut the dust in your mouth from heavy breathing.
Obviously Jesus was so parched that he couldn't make any sounds without some water...so they gave him some so they could make more sport of the crucifixion subject. (Crucifixion was reserved for the worst offenders...kinda like what we would want for child rapist murderers)

I've heard the thing about the sponge...but it's not true. It's not the one from the latrines.
